Cardiovascular Health Program - DHEC change in this disease pattern in south carolina. community education, project evaluation, health systems, and physical activity, and nutrition areas, while http://www.scdhec.gov/cvh/cvh_program.htm
Extractions: The Division of Cardiovascular Health (CVH) received funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 1998 to develop and coordinate basic cardiovascular disease program functions and activities at the state level. Due to the division's success in meeting its objectives during the first three years, CDC designated South Carolina as a Comprehensive Cardiovascular Health State in September 2001. This meant increased funding for a new five-year period with emphasis on implementation of initiatives instead of planning. South Carolina is one of only six states in the country to reach the comprehensive level so this is a major accomplishment for our state. Having established a strong base during the three-year core capacity-building period, DHEC is initiating a comprehensive statewide program to address cardiovascular disease prevention and control using multilevel approaches that will focus not only on information and education but also on policy and environmental change . These broad strategies include: developing and coordinating partnerships, developing scientific capacity to define the cardiovascular disease problem, gathering data to add to an inventory of policy and environmental strategies, writing a comprehensive State Plan, providing training and technical assistance, developing and implementing population-based strategies, and developing culturally competent strategies for the priority populations.

Extractions: South Carolina Department of Social Services piloted the SFMNP through the Councils on Aging in 13 counties. The program was effective May 1, 2001, through September 30, 2001. Fifteen thousand eligible seniors were given $50 in vouchers (5 vouchers worth $10 each). Seniors registered for the program at a variety of sites, including Council on Aging sites, community centers, and churches. Farmers were not permitted to make change for the vouchers, and some seniors could not spend the entire voucher with one vendor. Nearly all participants reported that the nutrition information given with the vouchers was helpful. Despite being provided with nutrition information, most seniors did not purchase a fruit or vegetable that they had never tried before. The most frequently cited barriers to not wanting to attend nutrition classes were a lack of available transportation and poor health. Major themes from farmers' comments included positive opinions about the program for both seniors and farmers, a desire for smaller denominations for the vouchers, and a desire for advance notice about the program to prepare for the next year's crop. To increase seniors' consumption of a variety of fruits and vegetables, dietitians should take the lead in developing future nutrition education materials that include simple recipes for produce that may be unfamiliar to and overlooked by seniors.
