Extractions: SPARTANBURG South Carolina senior citizens and disabled residents will have more choice in deciding how their Medicaid money is spent. Gov. Mark Sanford was at the Mountain View nursing home in Spartanburg County Wednesday to announce the pilot program South Carolina Choice. Sanford said the community long-term care program of the Department of Health and Human Services will be able to change the way their Medicaid money is used. Up to this point, senior citizens have had to go through a state-approved agency if they needed at-home health care. The new program allows them to use the money to have a friend, neighbor or relative care for them for the hours they need. Patients can contact a state advisor through the program who can help them get state authorization to spend program money on a particular service or product. Sanford said this plan will let senior citizens use the money in ways that will let them stay home, rather than move to institutional homes.
