Extractions: Mount Pleasant first in Charleston County, among first in the State to offer interactive zoning maps on the web CLICK HERE FOR ZONING MAPS! MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (December 6, 2002) - The Town of Mount Pleasant became today the first municipality in Charleston County to offer the public GIS interactive zoning maps on the web. Mount Pleasant is one of a few South Carolina municipalities including Rock Hill, North Augusta and Aiken that offer public access to interactive zoning maps on the internet. Residents can now easily determine if their properties are located in the incorporated or un-incorporated areas of the town and determine their zoning status. "We do not want people to think that they have to interpret the maps themselves," said Christiane Farrell, Planner III, "but this new service will allow people with a basic knowledge of Mount Pleasant Zoning Code to retrieve information quickly." Farrell pointed out that both the Code of Ordinances and the GIS Interactive Zoning Map System can be combined to confirm zoning questions. "We think that the volume of zoning calls may diminish by half once the public realizes what this new software can provide, but we are always available to answer additional questions and to clarify any items for residents." It took more than two years of data collection and software implementation before the GIS Interactive Zoning Map System could come on line. "We literally canvassed each street in Mount Pleasant to determine and verify addresses," said Farrell. "The Charleston County GIS Department and Aiken-based Bradshaw Consulting Services were instrumental in ensuring the success of this project. Charleston County forwarded us parcels maps and tax data, to which we added zoning and zoning history with the help and guidance of our consultants. Gathering the zoning history and the street center line data, which includes street names and addresses ranges for each street, took an incredible amount of time but will prove invaluable to fire and police services in the future to locate residences during emergency calls."
