Extractions: Beaufort County School Board, District Lauded for Arts Education The Beaufort County School Board today received the 15th annual Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network and National School Boards Association Award recognizing excellence in arts education. School boards were nominated by Kenney Center state Alliances for Arts Education and state school board associations. Since 1989, this prestigious award has nationally recognized 33 school boards in 23 states for their support of arts education. School districts selected for this national honor must demonstrate support for all four artistic disciplines in their arts education program including visual arts, music, theater and dance. Instruction and programming must also be available for all students throughout the district. Specifically, the Beaufort County School District requires arts curriculum offerings in general music, strings and visual arts for all pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students. Dance, drama, band and chorus offerings are added at the middle school level and continue into high school. The ways in which the school district develops collaborative partnerships with the cultural resources available in the community was also an important consideration in reviewing nominations.
Extractions: @import "pages.css"; Teacher Leaders At CERRA, identifying and recognizing teacher leaders is just the beginning of improving our profession and the learning experiences of students. We know that teacher leaders must also accept the responsibility to use their voices for meaningful reform. In 2002, the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement (CERRA) challenged the current SC Teacher of the Year, Christi McCollum, to take teacher leadership to a new level at the Center by designing activities that would invite more collaboration between our two teacher leader groups: the SC Teacher Forum Leadership Council and the Policy Board for the Board Certification Network of SC Educators. Beginning steps had been taken prior to Christi's year as a Teacher in Residence at the Center, but much work had to be done to create a higher level of professional growth and development between these two groups. With the support of CERRA staff members, Christi led these teachers through the initial year of collaboration and leadership training that made it possible for the Center to reach an important goal - the inclusion of a wider network of accomplished teachers in more focused activities designed to support improved teaching in South Carolina through recruitment and retention activities at CERRA. South Carolina leads the nation in teacher leadership opportunities, including one of the oldest and strongest Teacher Forums and one of the largest statewide populations of National Board Certified Teachers in the country. Thanks to the support of advocates, legislators, policymakers, and school and community leaders, the Center continues to cultivate teacher leaders.
