Extractions: Mentoring the Mentor: A Challenge for Staff Development By Monica Janas Journal of Staff Development , Fall 1996 (Vol. 17, No. 4) Since Odysseus entrusted the education of his son to an advisor and friend named Mentor over three thousand years ago, the concept of mentoring has become firmly tied to the educational process. Although the term "mentor" is rooted in mythology, it has grown and flourished throughout the history of education. Today, not only are mentors linked to the education of students but also to the professional development of teachers and administrators. Selecting and Training Mentors Matching Mentors with Proteges The relationship between the mentor and the protege is the heart of the supportive process (Freedman, 1993; White-Hood, 1993). One of the first things to be considered when establishing mentor-pairs is proximity. Administrators and others interested in staff development have typically matched mentors and proteges using geographical proximity and similarity of assignments as the main criteria. Administrative convenience need not be the only factor in making assignments of mentor/protege pairs. Setting Goals and Expectations Establishing Mentor Programs After goals are set, it is time to establish the mentoring program so that it will support the mentor/protege pairs throughout the development of their relationships. The first step is to build a support structure that includes making physical arrangements and handling logistics. A second step is to create monitoring and supervisory mechanisms to assure a process of continual assessment of the relationship. A third step in establishing a mentoring program is to evaluate the staff developers' skills and abilities.

He began his career as an advocate for education reform by working to desegregate schools in South Carolina and was recently director of the Program for Student Achievement at the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation. var topjobs_count="5"; var topjobs_option="1"; On Saturday, concerned and outraged South Carolinians will gather at Zion Baptist Church in downtown Columbia to begin their 10 a.m. march to the Statehouse. What is this march about and why is it necessary? First, because of budget cuts during the past several years, the General Assembly has shortchanged all South Carolina public schools by a total of $282 million. When the Legislature enacted the 1977 Education Finance Act (EFA), it pledged to support the "base student cost" necessary for the minimum operation of the state's schools. Each year, the General Assembly is supposed to provide these funds, which are just enough to keep schools open and barely staff them.

Since the network is interactive, students and faculty can see and talk to each other in "real" time as if the distant persons are in the same room. By the end of 1998, connected educational sites on the network will increase to over 25. The network's signals are transmitted over land-based, copper wire ("T-l") technology. One half of the T-1 network is used for data transmission via frame-relay technology, with the other half for video transmission.
