When its 1,100 schools opened last month, 86 percent of them had T1 lines or better linking them to the Internet. "That's quite an accomplishment, and [the percentage is] increasing," says Linda Bartone of the state education department's office of technology. A year ago, 73 percent of the state's schools were connected to the Internet through T1 lines or better. The state has funded the ambitious wiring program since 1996. State officials use special software to monitor how often schools use the Internet. A school gets updated access lines when the software indicates substantial Internet activity or when it has 75 or more computers, Bartone says. This fiscal year, which began July 1, the legislature is devoting $12 million to the connectivity project, with a total of $40 million assigned to school technology overall. Additional initiatives include a statewide virtual library that gives public and private schools, public libraries, and colleges and universities access to a variety of online databases, services, and encyclopedias.
