Country List World Factbook Home The World Factbook South Africa Introduction South Africa Background: After the British seized the Cape of Good Hope area in 1806, many of the Dutch settlers (the Boers) trekked north to found their own republics. The discovery of diamonds (1867) and gold (1886) spurred wealth and immigration and intensified the subjugation of the native inhabitants. The Boers resisted British encroachments, but were defeated in the Boer War (1899-1902). The resulting Union of South Africa operated under a policy of apartheid - the separate development of the races. The 1990s brought an end to apartheid politically and ushered in black majority rule. The Jews of Lemba The Lemba are a tribe of self-proclaimed Jews who cling proudly to the belief that they are descended from the lost tribes of Israel. The southern African clan is located mostly in Limpopo Province, although small communities live in Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia. It's a population comprising tens of thousands. Their late leader, Professor Mathasaya Mathiva claimed that his original family name was Seremane, a derivative of Solomon. Lemba lore has been passed from generation to generation through African storytelling and believers live by many Jewish rituals. Why should people who have already suffered through the cruelty of apartheid insist on retaining their Judaism? After all, history has shown that the world is not always partial to Jews.
