Extractions: Welcome to Bill Walser's Meadow View Observatory The observatory saw first light 15 May 1999 and is located in central North Carolina. It was motivated by love of deep space color images and my frustration over setting up and taking down telescope and computer equipment every clear night (Ignoring the issues of bugs, heat and ice). Total construction time was about two months including the dome, its base and the control cabin. It now takes less than ten minutes to start imaging. The dome is a ten foot ProDome and the cabin is a twelve foot square kit available through Lowe's. The cabin can be close to the dome because the ring of trees around the meadow raises the horizon thirty degrees in all directions. Some of the images included are early efforts (some obviously so). The learning curve for this type of imaging is difficult because of the broad range of knowledge required and a considerable amount of "hands on" doing (and frustration). Although some are technically weak they are still beautiful. If you enjoy these images, I would invite you to make donations to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Astronomy Department to support their graduate and research programs. A space elevator is a physical connection from the surface of the Earth, or another planetary body such as Mars, to a geostationary Earth orbit (GEO - In the case of Earth) above the Earth at roughly 35,786 km in altitude. It is hoped that someday a space elevator would be utilized as a transportation and utility system for moving people, payloads, power, and gases between the surface of the Earth and space. It makes the physical connection from Earth to space in the same way a bridge connects two cities across a body of water.
