Extractions: Goals and Objectives The faculty of the Department of Mining and Geological Engineering met in brainstorming sessions several times during the Spring 1998 semester. As a result of these sessions, we have developed the following Goals and Objectives that we believe will achieve our vision for the future. Goal 1 and Objective 1: Provide The Solid Background in Math, Science and Engineering That Is Needed to Solve Mining and Geological Engineering Problems. "Getting the science right" is fundamental for successful engineering practice. A thorough background in math, science and engineering is the foundation upon which Mining Engineering is practiced. The specific ABET requirements for Mining and Geological Engineering programs serve as our guide for this goal. Goal 2: Provide An Educational Experience That Prepares Students To Creatively Apply Basic Knowledge To Solve Open-ended Problems. We understand that our graduate Mining and Geological Engineers must be proficient at applying basic knowledge to engineering practice. To ensure that our graduates acquire this proficiency, we have established the following seven educational objectives: Objective 2(a): Emphasize the ability to use basic math and science to solve practical mining and geological engineering problems. This involves fully integrating basic math and science course material into Mining and Geological Engineering courses throughout the curriculum.
