Extractions: Charlie Redmond Over $7 billion of venture capital was invested in the 4th quarter of 2001 . Yes, Q4 2001, the quarter preceded by 9/11. Last year venture capitalists invested a total of $36.5 billion, making 2001 the third highest year ever in VC dollars invested. You may think were in a recession/slowdown/economic downturn/use-your-own-word-for-not-so-hot-economic-period. There are plenty of economists around who would agree with you. Alan Greenspan does not lower interest rates six times within three months because he suffers from irrational exuberance. Yet PricewaterhouseCoopers, Venture Economics and the National Venture Capital Association, the leading providers of statistics for the venture capital industry, report that last years total VC funding was nearly double the VC funding of 1998 . And 1998 was a strong year economically, very much part of the 90s unprecedented economic expansion and at the front end of the dot-com funding bubble, so how bad a year could that have been? As the above chart shows, 2001 was down substantially from 1999-2000, but those were extraordinary years for venture capital, unprecedented both in growth and total investing. Dot-com funding fueled an explosion of VC deals beyond previous imagining, with total dollars invested more than doubling between 98 and 99, then doubling again between 99 and 2000. That sort of growth would be noteworthy for a small market. For what had been a $20 billion market in 1998, it is truly astonishing.

Symantec, Inc. Small Business Enforce it The American management Association survey found that is tied directly to critical business issues, such as privacy policy is no small undertaking. http://www.symantec.com/region/in/smallbiz/library/check.html
Extractions: Imagine that your business has a make-or-break presentation scheduled today with a prospective client. But after arriving at work this morning, you discovered that key files needed for the meeting are corrupt. The culprit: a virus-infected email message that one of your employees forwarded from the Web last night to everyone in the company. Assess your risks Few people would doubt that email has revolutionised communications in today's business world. According to the American Management Association's 2003 "Email Rules, Policies and Practices" survey, 86 percent of respondents said that email has made them more efficient, while 51 percent said they are much more efficient. Gartner Group, meanwhile, forecasts that 70 percent of all corporations will use IM this year, and that by 2005 IM will represent 50 percent of all business-to-client communications. But employee use of such tools can open businesses to some costly liabilities, including workplace lawsuits, sexual harassment claims, trademark and patent infringement suits, internal security breaches, hacker attacks, and lost productivity. As a result, companies are increasingly adopting strict privacy policies often including monitoring to govern their employees' email and IM activity. Consider these additional findings from the American Management Association's survey:
