Wildlife In Crisis Guidelines - Baby Mammals Use a plastic pet carrier for larger babies. For skunks and opossums, start with soaked dry dog food, turkey baby food or canned cat food. http://www.wildlifeincrisis.org/guidelines/mammals.htm
Extractions: Wash all utensils, gloves and cages used with a 1:10 bleach/water solution. CHECK FOR INJURY OR SIGNS OF ILLNESS: Examine the animal for puncture wounds, lacerations, maggots and more serious injuries such as dislocations or broken bones. If an animal shows signs of paralysis, thick, yellow mucous discharge from nose or eyes, or convulsions are present, bring the animal immediately to your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic for euthanasia. MAKE SURE THE ANIMAL IS WARM TO THE TOUCH: Young mammals cannot regulate their own body temperature. They need a heat source, either a hot water bottle or a heating pad on a low setting. Be sure you put the heat source under only half the cage so that the animal does not overheat. Initially, you can warm a baby mammal with your own body warmth (not directly on your skin) or immerse them in warm water for a few minutes (making sure to keep head out of water) and dry thoroughly.

There is a lot of text so increase your font size or go get your reading glasses. Hi there! My name is Theo Possum. Get it? Theo Possum... The oPossum... the Opossum... Oh well, never mind, it's a dumb name anyway. Stupid humans and their cute pet names... Anyway, as far as I can tell, I am the only possum on earth with his own 'dot com'. But I'm not here to talk about the internet, I'm here to talk about me. And did I mention that my name is Theo Possum? My story starts the night dear old Mom walked out in front of a pickup truck. Even though Mom was not looking very good and was feeling kind of run down, my two sisters and three brothers and I were all safe and cozy in her pouch. We were adopted by well meaning human types who wanted to save us from certain death. They gave us a nice cardboard pouch with soft fuzzy towels and a hot water bottle to keep us warm. Every three hours they would wake us up and feed us a warm formula of soy milk and 2% milk out of an eyedropper. Why soy milk and 2% milk, you ask? Who knows? As we grew, our humans fed us all kinds of things that they thought possums liked to eat. We were given grapes, apples, earthworms, cicadas, balogna, baby food, cheese, hamburger, turkey, gravy and other things I still can't name. We were happy, hungry and growing. Our humans were very pleased at saving us from inevitable doom.

If I had fed the rabbits cow's milk unaltered, they would have starved to death. I fed them goat's milk and egg yolk. Milk composition table, in percentages, from Borden, Inc. research:

San Mateo County Animal Laws Living with Local Wildlife A common misconception is that setting a live trap, catching the raccoon, skunk or opossum and destroying it or relocating it will take care of the nuisance. However, before too long another raccoon, skunk or opossum will move into the area. If it was a good habitat for one, it's just as good for another. Urban wildlife enjoy the easy life we often unknowingly provide for them; they don't like a hostile environment. Taking steps to deter them will encourage them to move on. If you have questions or encounter specific problems, please contact our Wildlife Care Center at 650/340-7022, ext. 340 or skelly@peninsulahumanesociety.org We offer information on living with raccoons skunks squirrels , and opossums . You can also find additional products and information to deter wildlife on the internet by searching wildlife repellents Living with Raccoons Raccoons rarely exhibit a fear of people or civilization, since they are born and raised in our neighborhoods. They have replaced their former nesting places with attics, crawlspaces, hot tubs, decks, tool sheds and storm drains. Dog and cat water bowls, swimming pools and ponds have replaced water sources such as creeks and springs. Raccoons are nocturnal animals who roam their neighborhoods each night looking for food. They are opportunistic feeders, dining on insects, fruits, vegetables, acorns, seeds, fish and small mammals, as well as dog and cat food and garbage that is left out overnight.

Extractions: Fax: 920.424.2113 An orphaned animal is a young animal whose natural parents are known to be dead and is too young to survive on its own. Before rescuing an animal, make sure it really needs help. If you have witnessed the death of its mother, it obviously is an orphan. However, a dead rabbit in the street doesnt necessarily mean the infant rabbits in your yard belong to that rabbit. If you find a nest of infants and believe the mother is missing, lay sticks in a specific pattern around the nest. Come back the next day to see if the sticks have been disturbed; if they have and the infants appear to be fine, the mother has probably made a visit to the nest and the young animals are not orphans. The best thing to do for them at this point is to leave them alone. If you find a healthy, young animal out of its nest and you think it is an orphan, leave it where you found it (as long as it isnt in immediate danger) and try to locate the nest yourself. If the animal is in immediate danger from pets or predators, place it in a safe spot while you look for the nest. Once the nest is found, retrieve the animal and return it to its nest.
