The first two are known as Alpine events, the latter two as Nordic events. Alpine competition now also includes the combined, with both downhill and slalom races; the giant slalom and the supergiant slalom, which resemble the slalom but use longer, less twisted courses that permit faster speeds, and the freestyle events of moguls (a downhill race in which a score for form for jumps over large bumps, or moguls, is combined with the elapsed time) and aerials (acrobatic twists, flips, and the like performed in the air). Jed Jacobsohn/Allsport LYON, France (Reuters) Olympic downhill champion Jean-Luc Cretier announced his retirement from Alpine skiing on Tuesday at the age of 34. "As the international federation didn't want to give me a wild card for the next World Cup season and having just left the clinic where I had surgery to clean up my knee, I thought there were too many obstacles for a comeback," Cretier said. Cretier, who won the Olympic title at the Nagano Games in Japan in 1998, said he wanted to dedicate more time to his family and would also organize company skiing weekends. Cretier had a bad fall in a World Cup downhill at Val Gardena, Italy, in December 1998, suffering multiple knee injuries which kept him out of skiing for two seasons.

Extractions: USA GETS BLANKED IN DOWNHILL AND CROSSCOUNTRY SKIING - While the US team was figured for medals in the downhills or cross country, they were hoping for a good showing with Todd Lodwick's Nordic Combined finish. Samppa Lajunen of Finland won the gold medal in the Nordic combined Sunday after finishing first in the 15-kilometer cross-country race J aakko Tallus, also of Finland, won the silver and Felix Gottwald of Austria won the bronze. But, T odd Lodwick of Steamboat Springs, Colo., was seventh, the highest finish for an American in the sport's Olympic history. "It's a little bit disappointing, because I had expectations of moving up," said Lodwick, who started seventh, 2 minutes and 15 seconds behind the leader. "Of course, I would have liked to have a medal around my neck, but taking the best American finish back to Steamboat, that's something I'm proud of." Americans Matt Dayton and Bill Demong were 18th and 19th, respectively. The other American in the event, Johnny Spillane, was 32nd. Rolf Monsen's ninth-place showing in 1932 was the previous best finish for a U.S. athlete.
