The goal of his expedition was to cross the Antarctic overland, but more than a year later, and still half a continent away from the intended base, the Endurance was trapped in ice and eventually was crushed. For five months Shackleton and his crew survived on drifting ice packs in one of the most savage regions of the world before they were finally able to set sail again in one of the ship's lifeboats. Alfred Lansing's Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage is a white-knuckle account of this astounding odyssey. Oztrack Ice Skating Bookshop

(Oct. 18, 1998) - Members of the U.S. Short Track team secured a spot on the World Cup team this weekend at the American Cup I held in Eagan, Minn. from Oct. 17-18, a qualifying meet for the remaining four of the six World Cups this season. Ron Biondo (Broadview Heights, Ohio) and Apolo Ohno (Seattle, Wash.) both joined the team for the men, and Sarah Williams (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) joined the team for the women. It was once again domination by U.S. teammates Amy Peterson (Maplewood, Minn.) and Erin Porter (Saratoga Springs N.Y.) , who both had a bye because of their top finishes in the last two World Cups. The pair swept the women's events to give them a number one and number two overall finish. Peterson finished first in the 1500-meters, 500-meters and 1000-meters and finished second to Porter in the 3000-meters. Porter finished second in all of her events except for her win in the 3000-meters. Ohno, the young inliner who crossed over from inline skating to speedskating in 1993, finished on top of the men despite a disqualification because of a pass in the 1000-meter race. Ohno finished first in the 1500 and the 500 and second in the 3000. Biondo had his best finishes this season, placing second overall to earn his World Cup spot. Biondo finished second in the 1500, 500, and 1000, and seventh in the 3000 meters.

The sport was revolutionized in the 1990s with the introduction of clap skates , allowing competitors to reach speeds of nearly 40 miles per hour. Speed skating is currently conducted on ovals with artificial ice. The length of the track for the major competitions is 400 m, but tracks of 333 m or 200 m are also in use. All races are held in pairs, for which two lanes on the track are used. At the back straight, the skaters switch lanes which causes them both to cover the same distance per lap. The most basic form of speed skating consists of skating a single event. This is the format used for the World Single Distance Championships and the World Cup. Usual distance include the 500 m, 1000 m, 1500 m, 3000 m (women only), 5000 m and 10000 m (men only), but several other distances are sometimes skated. For championships, the 500 m and the 1000 m are currently conducted in two runs, with the final ranking based on accumulated times.
