Extractions: Shipwrecks of the West Coast Trail by Tim French It was the spring of 1943, and a 15-year-old boy took his first summer job at the Pachena Point lighthouse on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Little did he know he would become a witness to one of the area's last major shipwrecks on record. On April 30, 1943, the Russian transport Uzbekistan lay wrecked on Darling Creek. Due to a gale and poor visibility, she had lost her position, and the strong northern current forced her ashore. Luckily the 50 crew members survived. But not all of the ships that have floundered on the shores of the West Coast Trail can claim the same. Richard Wells was that 15-year-old boy. Fifty-six years later he still remembers the day the Uzbekistan wrecked, and the ship's boiler and other machinery are still visible. Today, Wells is the author of A Guide to Shipwrecks Along the West Coast Trail , one of the most referred-to guidebooks on West Coast Trail shipwrecks. Although designed for hikers, his guide is also popular with anyone interested in the history of these shipwrecks. The West Coast Trail runs from Port San Juan, near Renfrew, to Cape Beale. Approximately 80 vessels were wrecked along the trail between 1854 and 1977. The earliest recorded shipwreck along the trail is the Brig William . She was wrecked on Jan. 1, 1854, and went ashore eight km east of Pachena Point. Her captain and cook drowned, but the remaining 14 crew members made it ashore. The coastal native people housed them and later took them to Sooke by canoe. Many other unfortunate ships would share the same fate as the

More than just a silent memory of past tragedies, shipwrecks are time capsules, moments of maritime history, captured by fate and waiting at the bottom of the sea to tell their stories. ParkNet With increasing awareness of America's underwater cultural heritage, the US National Park Service began documenting the location and condition of shipwrecks in the 1960's. This activity accelerated in the 1970's as park managers became more aware of the richness and international importance of submerged resources in the National Park System. In 1980, the Submerged Cultural Resources Unit (known as SCRU) was formed and staffed by underwater archeologists and photographers to provide the expertise required by managers of national parks with submerged lands. Renamed the Submerged Resources Center in 1999 to include natural resources, the core mission of the program has remained the same: to inventory and evaluate submerged resources in the National Park System and to assist other agencies, nationally and internationally, with underwater heritage resource issues. Use "Back" button to return to text The English Channel has long been one of the busiest seaways in the world, and consequently one of the most dangerous. The coast between Lyme Regis and St Albans Head, is at best a treacherous and unforgiving shore. In the centre thrusting out into the channel is the Island of Portland, with the notorious race waiting at the Bill, at spring tides the race runs at 7 knots, a riot of swift deep water, and in a easterly gale with the ebb tide it can reach 10 knots. One night in 1894, the schooner, Lord Duffas was driven ashore at Portland Bill and was totally destroyed, an unknown wreck. Had it not been for part of the ships log, which was washed up with the bodies and pieces of broken timber, to provide the only clue as to the ships identity. While to the South east of Portland Bill lies the three-mile long Sandbank, known as the Shambles, this sandbank is almost a mile wide and some mile and a half from the nearest point of land, and no more than thirteen feet deep at low water at the Eastern end. From Portland Bill to Lyme Regis, a distance of almost thirty miles, there is no safe anchorage except in the finest of weather, for Bridport Harbour (known as West Bay Harbour) is dangerous to enter if not impossible in rough weather. With the wind between South West and North West it is the most dangerous of lee shores, to be avoided at all costs, for countless vessels have been caught within the extended arc of the West Bay and utterly destroyed.
