After initial reconstruction work was completed, the Taiwan railway system underwent a thorough modernization over a period of five decades, and the locomotives were changed from steam diesel to electric. The North Link officially entered service in February 1980, and the South Link was completed in 1992. The complete railway network that is now in place has assumed a significant role in providing inland transportation services for the country's economic development. The Taiwan Railway Administration »OÆWÅK¸ôºÞ²z§½ (TRA) offers four types of passenger train services. The fastest express class is the Zihciang (Tzuchiang) express ¦Û±j¸¹, which only stops at major stations. The next fastest express class, with more frequent stops at lesser, but still large stations, is the Jyuguang (Chukuang) express ²÷¥ú¸¹. The third class of trains, the Fusing (Fuhsing) express ´_¿³¸¹, includes stops at every station on designated commuter routes. Finally, local trains serve mostly long routes, stopping at every station and generally yielding to higher-priority Zihciang, Jyuguang, and Fusing trains.

Following is a list of ship development milestones: The earliest craft were log dugouts, rafts, and boats made of hides stretched over a wooden frame. About 6,000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians built reed boats powered by paddlers. About 5,200 years ago, they invented sails. Another breakthrough in sailing technology occurred in 3000 BC when the Egyptians learned to build vessels from wood planks. Around 500 BC the Greeks built ships with two masts. Shipbuilders in northern Europe devised the stern rudder in AD 1303. In the 1450's, shipbuilders in the Mediterranean developed the full-rigged sailing ship. The first workable submarine was constructed from a wooden rowboat covered with waterproof hides in 1620. The first commercial successful steamboat was built in 1807. In 1818, the first all-iron sailing ship was built. A propeller-driven steamship design was patented in 1836.

Gill's Report on the U.S. Navy's Transport Service During Wartime Previous to 1916 the idea of a United States overseas expeditionary force numbered by millions would have been generally regarded as a remote if not impossible contingency. Consequently no extensive peace-time preparations had been made for such an undertaking. The task of providing a transport fleet was, therefore, a pioneer work. Ships had to be obtained, officers and crews enrolled and trained. It was necessary to provide docks, storehouses, lighters and tugs, coaling equipment, repair facilities, and all the varied machinery for operating and maintaining a large transportation service. An efficient administrative organization had to be developed.
