Many people mistakenly believe that sharks are a significant threat to human life. The majority of the 370 species of sharks are harmless, are less than 2 m long, and many species are less than 1 m long. The largest species, the whale and basking sharks, are plankton feeders, and no threat to humans. Sharks and their close relatives, the rays and the ghost sharks, belong to the class Chondrichthyes, the cartilaginous fishes. They are distinguished from the bony fishes by having only cartilage in the skeleton. A more easily seen feature is five to seven open gill slits on the side of the head in sharks (in rays the gill slits are underneath and the pectoral fins joined to the head), while bony fishes have their gill slits covered by an operculum or flap. The ghost sharks also have a cartilaginous skeleton, but their gill slits are covered by an operculum, or flap. One hundred and sixty five shark species, slightly less than half the world total, are found in Australian waters. Those families with the largest number of Australian species are the dogfish family Squalidae (40 species), the catshark family Scyliorhinidae (32 species) and the whaler family Carcharhinidae (30 species). Still, the large school had prompted authorities to alert swimmers and fishermen Tuesday to possible danger. For two hours Wednesday morning, scientists surveyed the area around Anclote Key, north of Tampa. Working with fishermen who tried to attract sharks using chum, they were unable to spot any sharks, said Sue Ellen Richardson, a spokeswoman for the Florida Aquarium. No sharks were spotted by air. Time.com People Fortune EW NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Florida (CNN) Hoping to avoid shark bite incidents, Volusia County, Florida, authorities on Saturday banned all water activities off a one-mile section of New Smyrna Beach, south of the Ponce de Leon inlet jetty. "We just want to be cautious," said Volusia County Beach Patrol Deputy Chief Joe Wooden. "We'll be monitoring from the beach, a boat and the sheriff's helicopter." Surf was low and winds were calm off the coast Saturday. Officials were monitoring the waters for a cluster of sharks that live in these bait fish-rich waters, ever since a series of shark-bite incidents began several weeks ago. Eight people were bitten in the past week; 18 so far this year. Deputy Chief Mike Hensler said they are watching a large influx of sharks on the New Smyrna side of the Ponce de Leon Inlet. "It's a very popular area, specific to surfers," Hensler said. "We still have 46 miles of beach the public can use in Volusia County. It's just a small strip that's closed to swimming."
