Extractions: MySQL AB CEO Marten Mickos gets my vote as one of the top database movers and shakers of 2003. Over the past year, this little Swedish company has been making big strides in shaking up the world of enterprise databases. While it's true that the DBMS world is still owned, for the most part, by the Oracle/IBM/Microsoft trio, a growing number of enterprises are turning to the open-source paradigm upon which the MySQL database is based. MySQL Vice President of Marketing Zack Urlocker recently told me there was something like 4 million downloads of the MySQL database out there. To satisfy the growing taste for open-source databases on the part of enterprises, MySQL took over SAP's open-source database and recently released it redubbed as MaxDB. The database reportedly has the high availability, scalability and comprehensive feature set that enterprises demand. In addition, MySQL recently received good press after an independent study found that its code is some six times cleaner than comparable proprietary code. We'll give Mickos the credit as the titular head of MySQL, but in reality, the credit should go to the massive community of open-source developers who constantly give of their time and talent to keep the code rock-solid. Nice work, people. Oracle CEO Larry Ellison also ranks as one of the top database influencers of the past year, and I'm not talking about his lust to devour a PeopleSoft Happy Meal. I'm referring to 10g, the grid computing platform that has beta testers raving. First and foremost, beta testers who've been tinkering with Oracle Database 10g and Oracle Application Server 10g are gleeful about the self-managing capabliities. Now all we need are verifiable instances of how this platform will save enterprises money by deploying low-cost commodity hardware, and we'll forgive Larry his trespasses against PeopleSoft. Maybe.

Extractions: General Information Beginning in England at a Quaker revival in 1747, the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, also known as the Millennial Church, or the Alethians, came to be called Shakers because of the trembling induced in them by their religious fervor. Led by James and Jane Wardley, the so - called Shaking Quakers were a minor religious sect until Ann Lee became the head of the movement. Mother Ann, as she was known, believed that she had received the feminine principle of the deity. Following imprisonment for her unorthodox views, she experienced a vision and led (1774) a small group to the United States, where they established (1776) a community at Watervliet, N Y Mother Ann made a number of converts, and after her death (1784) they established further communities under the leadership of Joseph Meacham and Lucy Wright. By 1826 there were 18 Shaker communities with about 6,000 members in 8 states. Their peak period was 1840 - 60. As revivalism declined after the Civil War, so did the fortunes of the communities. By 1980 the Shakers were almost extinct. The Shakers believed in Mother Ann as the source of God's fullest revelation to humankind. Other doctrines and practices included celibacy, open confession of sins, communal sharing of possessions, pacifism, equality of the sexes, and consecrated labor. They rejected Calvinist ideas of predestination and emphasized free will. In their well - organized, self - sufficient communities segregated from the outside world, the Shakers worshiped in unusual ways; dancing, ecstatic shouting, and trances were held to be proof of the Holy Spirit's presence.

It could become a fixture in infertility clinics, they hope. Obstetrics researcher Gary Smith hit on the idea when he heard about a curious phenomenon of fluids: microscopically narrow streams running side by side barely mix. "I thought well, gosh, this would help to sort sperm," says Smith, at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Semen is dripped into one side of the postage-stamp-sized silicon chip, which is etched with lanes less than half a millimetre wide; salt water is dripped into the other end. As the two lanes merge, frisky sperm swim into the stream of salt water, while the dead and disabled remain behind. A human sample starting with only 45% healthy sperm comes out with 98% fit for purpose "It's a nice application of this basic phenomenon," says David Beebe of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who works on similar chips. They now have to show that the purified sperm can fertilize eggs, he points out.
