The Shakers have several official names: the United Society of Believers in Christs Second Appearing; the Millennial Church; the Children of Truth; the Alethians (derived from the Greek word for truth). The sect first appeared as an offshoot of the Society of Friends (Quakers), around 1750 in Manchester, England. The leaders of the groupwhich was called the Shaking Quakers, or Shakerswere husband and wife ministers James and Jane Wardley. The Shakers broke off from the mainstream Quaker church and came under the influence of a group of charismatic preachers and miracle-workers called the French Prophets. bodyOffer(28816) The Shakers were best known for the fervor of their worship services. Like the Quakers, Shakers would sit in silent meditation, waiting to be moved by the Spirit, but the Shakers response to this spiritual power was to tremble violently (hence Shakers) and to spin and dance. Under the influence of the holy Spirit they engaged in group ring dances, marches, singing and shouting, speaking in tongues (glossolalia), prophecy, faith-healing, miracle-working, and spiritual trances, often accompanied by visons. The English mystic Ann Lee (1736-1784), who was baptized and married in the Church of England, was drawn to the Shakers in 1758, spending fifteen years with the sect before leading a small group of followers to America. Mother Ann (as her followers came to call her) frequently disrupted Anglican Church services, and was finally imprisoned following one such outburst. During her imprisonment she experienced a series of visions, which revealed that sex was the main cause of sin and should be avoided; that she herself was the fulfillment of Christs Second Coming; and that it was her duty to carry the Word, which she embodied, to the New World.

World Civilizations The Reader's Companion to American History The Shakers, a perfectionist utopian movement, originated in Manchester, England, after Ann Lee, a member of the Shaking Quakers, had a visionary experience. She claimed to have seen Adam and Eve in sexual intercourse, after which Jesus enjoined her to teach others that lust was the source of sin. Her ideas about lust and corruption were intensified by the death of her four children. Thereafter, she suffered a dread of sexual relations and formed a religious order based on celibacy. In 1774 Lee moved her group to America. They settled first near Albany, New York, but after Lee's death in 1784, they moved to New Lebanon, New York. By 1822 there were four thousand Shakers in more than a dozen communities. In the 1780s leaders initiated a cooperative economic system and organized communes composed of extended "families." Shaker communities abolished private property, regulated all behavior, and imposed mandatory confessions. Organized around the concept of celibacy, Shaker communities kept men and women carefully segregated. Children were raised communally. Their religious services provided emotional release through trembling, speaking in tongues, and falling into tranceshence, the name Shakers. Membership turnover was always high, but before 1830 many members stayed for decades. Often whole families joined. Shaker population reached its peak of about five to six thousand during the 1830s but then dropped dramatically. Shakers were renowned for their original styles of vocal music, crafts, and architecture. Adhering to the idea that form follows function, they created furniture designs that are highly prized for their simple lines and functionality. Shakers invented an impressive array of devices from the common clothespin and the flat broom to a revolving oven and a folding stereoscope. They pioneered the industry of herbal medicines and the selling of garden seeds in packets.
