Vance How can a movement founded on the prophecies and visions of one woman, and reliant in its early stages on the pastoral leadership, teaching, and proselytizing of many others, come to define women's roles in ways that exclude them from active public participation and leadership in the church? Laura Vance offers a probing examination of the link between Seventh-day Adventism's development as a church and its attitudes toward gender roles. Adventism's early years, during which it identified itself in opposition to the Protestant mainstream, were distinguished by the leadership of women, most prominently the prophet Ellen White. However, after 1915 the number of Adventist women in positions of influence began a dramatic decline that was not challenged until the 1980s. Many Adventists attribute the recent assumption of leadership positions by women to the church's capitulation to secular feminist movements.
