In contrast, with the rest of the country, Casamance offers the richness of a mosaic perpetually renewed by its landscapes. Savannah, bush, majestic forests, coconut palm groves rustling with the ocean breeze - the list is endless. Here, each of the tropical essences is present, imposing baobabs, mangroves with multiple roots, glittering flame trees, undulating palm groves, glistening bourgainvilleas, fragrant eucalyptus trees and the most majestic of all, the kapok tree, whose twisted trunk is sometimes more than two meters thick. The Casamance region is home to a very traditional group: the Diolas and their cousins, the Mandjakes and the Balantes. They live in a very lush area of deep forests and perform their initiation ceremonies in the "sacred woods". Some are annual, others take place every 30 to 40 years. The best way to understand the culture and really exchange with the people is through the highly successful "integrated rural tourism". The people of fifteen villages have built huts exactly like theirs, at the periphery of the village, and have added a few amenities for the tourists. Their guests eat the food prepared by the women, take pirogue trips with the men, enjoy the calm life of the village and the vitality of the numerous traditional dances and ceremonies. All proceeds remain in the village and are used in development projects.

Following this period, the semester will continue through June with a spring break in late March/early April. What can I study? The Institut de Francais pour Etudiants Etrangers (IFE) is a part of the UCAD University system that specializes in the teaching of French language and the literature and culture of French-speaking (Francophone) countries. Courses at IFE are available based on your command of the French language. You will be tested to determine your French level and based on your individual level, will attend classes of your choice. All classes are taught in French. You will be expected to continue French language instruction throughout the semester, along with courses in Francophone culture, Francophone literature, and Wolof, the prominent local language. As in many countries, disadvantage accumulates at the level of women and girls. In 1995, female literacy countrywide was just over half the rate for men (23 percent compared to 44 percent), and the discrepancy was still greater in rural areas. Tostan, literally means "breaking out of the egg" in Wolof, the language spoken by the majority of Senegal's 7.9 million people and is among a number of innovative rural development and women's education initiatives that are addressing the problem at its source. It offers an 18-month learning program that combines basic education in national languages with practical development issues, and provides rural people with the resources to improve their standard of living while fostering increased confidence in their way of life.
