From researching your genealogical roots to locating long-lost sweethearts, web search engines and people locators can lead to joyful reunions. During the summer of 1997, I began an active search to find my birth father. My natural parents divorced when I was four, then my mother died of cancer when I was seven. Relatives in California adopted my sister and me. Although probably a misguided attempt to protect us, my adoptive family forbid my birth father from visiting. After twenty-seven years of separation, I finally began the search. I knew his last name Howell and remembered hearing him called both "Jerry" and "Bill." Since I lived in Boston before the adoption, I focused first on Massachusetts addresses but planned to send letters throughout the East Coast. I used the Internet to search for both e-mail and street addresses. I found thousands of Howells online. Many of these strangers were generous in providing leads. I copied street address information into a Microsoft Word merge form, then sent out letters weekly. The seventh packet of letters brought a miracle.
