(AP) - Most of a startling number of sea otters found sick or dead on the entral California coast last month were infected with a deadly brain parasite, state scientists said Thursday. In April, 62 southern sea otters were found stranded alive or dead near Morro Bay and Pismo Beach. That's about three times the 10-year average and more than the previous record of 48 stranded or dead otters reported a year earlier. After examining the animals, researchers determined most were infected with a parasite called Sarcocystis neurona and suffered brain inflammation, said the state Department of Fish and Game. The parasite originates in the feces of opossum - a small marsupial mammal not native to California - and is known to cause brain damage. Researchers are unclear how the otters came into contact with the feces.

The sea otter (Enhydra lutris) is the only member of the genus Enhydra and the largest member of the family Mustelidae, which also includes weasels, skunks and badgers. It is smallest marine mammal and hunts, sleeps and mates in the sea. It is found around the coast of the North Pacific Ocean from the Kurils to California where it forms a close relationship with the great kelp beds in which it spends most of its life. The sea otter dives for sea urchins and other bottom-dwelling marine life that it then kills using rocks as tools before eating. The coat of the animal is extremely dense to act as insulation in the cold water and, as such, is very warm. The indigenous peoples of the North Pacific region used the pelt of the sea otter as clothing and, when Europeans arrived in the eighteenth century, the pelts became one of the main items of trade. This beautiful, clever and interesting animal was, innocently, the cause of most of what followed in the history of the fur trade on the Northwest Coast.

By Michelle Mellon You've probably seen pictures of them, floating on their backs with their fuzzy heads above the water. They are one of the most popular animals in the sea, but they are also in serious trouble. Fossil records show that sea otters (Enhydra lutris) have been around for at least five million years. They were once found along the eastern Pacific coast from Mexico to Alaska and across the ocean from Japan to Russia. With Europeans' discovery of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands in the mid-1700s, however, otters fell prey to the maritime fur trade. Although they were protected under the International Fur Seal Treaty of 1911, the southern sea otter population was listed as threatened in 1977 under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Today, some 60,000 northern sea otters are scattered along the coasts of Alaska. Alarmingly, only 2,000 southern sea otters remain off the coast of central California. Sea otters are the largest members of the weasel family. Unlike their terrestrial cousins, they have adapted to spending most of their lives in water. Their flipper-like hind feet and broad, flat tails make them capable swimmers, but leave them awkward on land. Sea otters' lungs, trachea, and blood are made for deep diving, allowing them to hunt food underwater, staying submerged for up to five minutes at depths up to 100 meters.

Publications The most musical animal under the sea is the male humpback whale, whose unique songs evolve over time. Sea Otter Sea otters average four feet in length and weigh between 40-60 pounds. While their bodies are adapted for water - they have flipper-like hind feet and broad flat tails - sea otters are actually quite slow swimmers when compared to other marine mammals. Unlike most marine mammals, sea otters lack a thick layer of fat to insulate them from cold temperatures. Instead, they have an extremely dense coat of fur which helps to trap a layer of air close to their skin to keep them warm. Female sea otters are ready to bear young at three to four years, and normally give birth to one pup. Since pups are heavily dependent upon their mothers for up to one year, sea otters usually reproduce every other year. Sea otter pups are typically two feet in length and weigh between three and five pounds at birth. Southern sea otters are found along the central coast of California. They eat sea urchins, mollusks, squid, crabs, and clams. Their teeth are specially adapted to eating shellfish, allowing them to crush shells and scoop out meat. They will occasionally eat finfish, but their rounded teeth lack the sharp edges necessary to handle the slippery prey.
