Extractions: The whole delightful adventure happened a few years ago. Yet every year since then, as the benevolent, satin-tailed lions dance to greet the Chinese New Year, I relive the fascination of that hot afternoon in Chinatown. It all began when my friend Lila invited me to the blessing of the lions. These, as devotees of Chinese festivals know, are the glittering, mock-fierce creations that apparently dance as men or boys concealed under them provide the motion. Newcomers to Hawai'i invariably call them dragons, which they resemble; the Chinese rightly insist they are lions. (The dancing dragon has a much longer tail and requires more men to manipulate it.) The Chinese cultural association Lila belongs to had brought these lions from Hong Kong. There were four of them, now proudly displayed in the organization's meeting hall. Each head, constructed on a bamboo foundation, glittered with bright colors and shining metal ornaments. Hidden batteries would light the enormous, round glass eyes; silken eyelids could be pulled from within the head so each lion could wink. The jaws worked on hinges so the beast could "eat" green leaves. The tails were shimmering coils of vari-colored satin. The lions - or more accurately, the heads - could not yet perform any of these wonders. Their eyelids were securely closed. A tiny padlock, suspended on string, hung before each lion's mouth, a symbol that he could neither roar nor eat. Unseeing, mute, without food, the lions awaited deleverance and transformation. They must be blessed.

Lions have so stirred the human imagination that scientists who first began studying animal behavior used the African lion ( Panthera leo ) as a subject. Their discoveries, while dispelling myths, also confirm some of the lore in old tales. Lions Why are you interested in lions? Take, for example, the concept of the "lion's share," which we all learned from the Aesop's fable. Looked at in terms of lion behavior, the fable turns out to be not far from right. Again and again lions have been observed moving in on prey killed by another lion or, more often, by lionesses. A lion will snarl and strike out with his paws as he wrests away a large portionas much as 80 pounds of meat or more at a kill. Often, however, males will guard their portion, keeping lionesses away from itand then share it with cubs. Most lions of the African savanna live in groups called prides. Each of these complex societies consists of two or more adult males and several females and juveniles. The territory of each pride is several miles in diameter, with boundaries that overlap into the adjacent territories. Prides generally stay intact as long as the food supply is abundant. The females in a pride most often are related, with sisters, cousins, mothers, and daughters all working together in the group. The cubs of one mother are adpoted by other mothers. In a kind of day-care arrangement, mothers share the suckling and the guarding of a pride's cubs. While some mothers and maturing cubs are on the hunt, other mothers and cubs stay in the heartland of the pride's territory and keep watch over the pride's youngest members. Cubs need protection from adult males. To them, an unprotected cub is prey.

No uncles or summers like this ever existed, but isn't it nice to think that Uncle Garth and Uncle Hub are waiting there on their Texas ranch, shooting at fish and salesmen, and waiting for their 12-year-old nephew to be dumped on them. They are two completely inexplicable and unlikely characters, and we doubt we can believe anything we learn about them, but in the hands of those sainted actors Robert Duvall and Michael Caine, they glow with a kind of inner conviction even while their stories challenge even the kid's credulity. Maybe Hub really was a foreign legionnaire and led thousands of men into battle and won and lost a dozen fortunes, and maybe he really was in love with a desert princess named Jasmine, and then again maybe he's just been sitting there on the porch with Garth making up tall tales for gullible nephews. The nephew's name is Walter, and he is played by Haley Joel Osment, the child actor from "The Sixth Sense" and "A.I.: Artificial Intelligence," now on the edge of adolescence but still with that clear-eyed directness that cuts right to the heart of a scene. Some actors have trouble standing up to that kind of unadorned presence, but Caine and Duvall are not ordinary, and they look the kid straight in the eye and tell him exactly what he needs to know.
