Extractions: SV of St. Louis MO says: I love that I can order a Print a Project pattern and be working on it the same day Tip of the Month: Easy Mixing... I don't know about you, but I am basically a slob and mixing adhesives like two part epoxy, powdered glues, dry putty, etc. are just another opportunity to ruin my clothes, stain my hands and generally make a mess of my workbench. Now we do our mixing without any fuss or mess thanks to a simple tip from one of you (submitted without a name). Put the ingredients in a small plastic sandwich bad and "squish" it until well mixed. Then, snip off the corner of the bag and squeeze out what you need. Different materials may require a larger or smaller 'snip', but the technique definitely works and I thank you...It's simple and effective! Project Assortments

Extractions: Making a copy: With any project, it is usually a good idea to keep the original copy of your pattern intact, in case something happens and you need to start all over. If a particular pattern turns out to be your favorite seller and you consistently trace over the same lines, eventually the original deteriorates to the point it is useless. With the original tucked away, you can always start over. The other thing to remember is that not all photocopiers make exact duplicates. If it is important that the copy "exactly" matches the original in size, make sure to lay one on top of the other, to check before proceeding. Do not use two different photocopiers for two halves of the same project. You may have trouble, where they link together. Tracing Method: This really requires little explanation, but I will leave you with this...if it is a large tracing, try using low tack masking tape to hold your pattern and carbon, in place while tracing. It is frustrating to get half way through the job, and have it move on you. We typically think of carbon paper as the black stuff from school days, but if you are trying to trace onto walnut this paper may be of little value. Try a few hobby stores to find coloured carbon paper. Yes, it really does exist..... even in white and yellow... often available from someone that teaches folk art painting. It really is great on dark woods.
Scroll Saw:selecting A Scrollsaw Blade the world for woodworking Crafts Real Wood Veneers for small boxes and marquetry woodworking Patterns for the Intarsia and scroll Saw Artist small woodworking http://www.thewoodbox.com/data/scrollsaw/scbladesinfo.htm
Extractions: To find the right type of blade, you really need to know a number of things, but remember everyone has their own opinion and preferences. You really have to do your own homework. Most manufacturers have charts with recommended speeds and material thicknesses for their blades. This helps, but here is a bit more info for you to consider. What you are cutting? (type of material, its thickness and the intricacy of your pattern). Certain types of material, like Plexiglas and aluminum require a special blade, but most wood can be cut with standard blades. All blades are stamped from steel blanks. Most are hardened and tempered. Better quality blades , use better quality steel and a refined tempering processes. This may be important when cutting difficult hardwoods. Hardwoods, also, usually require a higher number blade, where the blade kerf (width of cut) is larger, and allows easier dust clearout. This is especially true with oily woods. The greater blade thickness also gives a longer life on denser woods. Gummy white pine may encourage you to try a skip tooth blade (more space between the teeth), for better dust removal. Trial....Trial ... and more Trial. Thickness of the wood With thick wood you want less teeth per inch, and of course with thin wood you need more teeth. The basic philosophy is to keep at least 4 teeth in the wood at all times. If you have too many teeth the sawdust can not clear out, the blade heats up and the wood burns, with too few teeth they catch on the wood, pulling it up and down on the table and out of control.

Ship Modelers Association - Tip Of The Month I helped man an SMA booth at a Long Beach woodworking show and took the opportunity to approach RBI and Hegner scroll saw booths with an 8/0 blade I had http://www.ship-modelers-assn.org/tps0105b.htm
Extractions: TIPS Bill Russell asked me to write an article on this subject for the SMA newsletter over four years ago. Considering how much I hate writing, I'm glad I can promptly comply with his request. I feel using a scroll saw in the construction of model ships requires a different approach than using one in general craft work such as sawing out large patterns. We work with small parts and many times have to saw a straight line precisely, which is hardly ever required in craft work. My desire to buy a scroll saw heightened after using a jewelers saw with an 8/0 blade (.010 in. wide X .0065 in. thick) to saw out the above scroll work for a 1:96 ship. It took me an 2 hours to complete the task including mistakes and two broken blades. I thought using a scroll saw would be a better way but didn't know if one could successfully use an 8/0 blade in a scroll saw. I helped man an SMA booth at a Long Beach woodworking show and took the opportunity to approach RBI and Hegner scroll saw booths with an 8/0 blade I had brought with me. I asked them to demonstrate using the 8/0 blade in their saws.
