    Extractions: I ordered this book early on when I began studying Scottish Gaelic, as I wanted a resource to look up words that were not available in my textbooks. On several occasions I've found that the word I was looking for was simply not in the dictionary. This dictionary does contain interesting words which likely have cultural links to Scotland, for example instead of having the word "cow" they might have fifteen different words of variation, with meanings like "newborn cow with spots" and other very specific forms. While these translations were interesting from a cultural perspective, this book simply did not deliver when I was looking for a word that I would use in real conversation. Unfortunately this book is simply too outdated for use as a primary learner's dictionary. Looking for Celtic, Gaulish and Gothic words?

The Book of Deer is a 9th century illuminated manuscript, written in Latin, of the Gospel of St. John and parts of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The Book of Deer gets its name from six Gaelic "notes", and a Latin charter of David I, concerning grants of land to the monastery of Deer that were written into various blank spaces of the manuscript circa 1130 to 1150 AD. These notes are the earliest known examples of Gaelic written in Scotland. The Gaelic used in the notes is "Middle Gaelic", also called "Middle Irish", which was the form of Gaelic common to Ireland and parts of Scotland from, roughly, 900 to 1200 A.D. The names included in this guide from the Gaelic notes are those of people who lived in Scotland, primarily in the north east of Scotland, in the 11th and early 12th centuries. This guide will show you how to construct a "typical" Scottish Gaelic name of this period. It gives you common structures and elements, but not an exhaustive list of all the possibilities. It is important to keep in mind, also, that not all 12th century Scots were Gaels, and thus a Scottish Gaelic name would not be appropriate for all Scottish personas/characters of this period.     Extractions: The History of Gaelic in Scotland It is difficult to say precisely when the first Gaels from Ireland arrived in Scotland although there is some evidence to suggest that they had visited some time before 300AD. We can also say that the first major settlement occurred shortly before 500AD at Dunaverty in Kintyre. The Romans referred to the Gaels as "Scotii". They were fiercely opposed by the Picts and they depended on a series of forts for protection. Nowadays, historians believe that the Picts themselves were also Celts who had been in Scotland for centuries before the arrival of the Gaels. At about this time there were four main tribes in Scotland; the Gaels in the Northwest, the Picts in the Northeast, the Britons in the Southwest and pushing into the Southeast were the Angles, a Germanic tribe who had settled in England. The Picts won a crucial victory over the Angles at Nechtansmere on 20 April 685AD, if this battle had gone the other way, the Angles would have controlled the majority of the land and Scotland might never had existed. Kenneth MacAlpine united the Scots and the Picts in 843AD, he was the first king of Alba which consisted of virtually all of the mainland to the north of the rivers Clyde and Forth. The name "Alba" has lasted until today as the Gaelic name for Scotland. During the next two centuries, the Gaelic language and culture flourished throughout Scotland since it was now the language of the kings and of the vast majority of the people.
