Extractions: Calendar of Events, Classes, and Lectures The Academy at 875 Howard Street in downtown San Francisco is now open. From now until our Grand opening on June 19, Academy visitors can get a preview of our new exhibits and see the Steinhart Aquarium as it is completed. The Academy's 875 Howard Street facility will host a suite of new aquarium displays housing thousands of Steinhart Aquarium animals. Many fish will be housed in familiar jewel tanks, but others will move into larger homes. A 20,000-gallon, two-story coral reef tank will hold the aquarium's corals and tropical reef fish. The penguins will also get a larger tank, which will enable visitors to view the birds both on land and underwater. A series of circular tanks up to 20 feet in diameter will hold groups of animals that share the same type of habitat. These tanks will be equipped with acrylic panels that allow for top-to-bottom viewing. Special admission prices apply during the preview period from May 1 - June 19, 2004. Steinhart Aquarium At 875 Howard Street, the aquarium will house thousands of live animals including penguins, fishes, snakes and frogs. The inside-out design will allow visitors to see the mechanisms that power the aquarium, sense the temperature and salinity of the tank water, feel the dirt in dry habitats and interact with aquatic biologists as they study and care for the animals.

Extractions: On June 11 in 1857, Leland Ossian Howard is born in Rockford, Illinois. A pioneer in the "biological control" of insects (in which natural enemies, rather than pesticides, are used for controlling pests), Howard headed the U.S. Department of Agriculture for more than 30 years, described 47 new groups of parasitic wasps and ants and 20 new species of mosquitoes, and did important research in medical entomology (the study of insects), which led to his discovery that houseflies carry and transmit many diseases. Hicksville Gregory Museum Specializes in the earth sciences and features historical exhibits. http://www.liglobal.com/t_i/attractions/museums/gregory/
Extractions: For one hundred years, the Heitz Place Courthouse has stood upon its grassy oval in Hicksville. It is probably the only courthouse of that era left on Long Island, and is the only one listed on the National Register of Historic Places. While European settlement on Long Island dates from the early 1600's, the Hempstead Plain remained largely unpopulated until the mid-nineteenth century. The Long Island Rail Road came through the area in 1836. Hicksville gradually grew after German immigrants began arriving in the 1840's. A rural village grew up around the railroad depot serving the needs of travelers and some local residents. John Herzog built a prosperous general store and craftsmen opened shops in the village center. Between the Civil War and the end of the century, Hicksville became a vacation spa for German-Americans, replete with hotels, taverns and dance halls. The parcel of land, originally owned by the Willet family, on which the Hicksville courthouse stands, comes from a purchase by Andrew Hegeman in 1848 for $375. Hegeman sold it to John Frederick Heitz for $1,279 in 1854. It changed family hands and in 1890, John Menken sold it to Frederick N. Heitz for $3,000. By the 1880's Hicksville's population had reached 850 people. Most farmedespecially tomatoes and cucumbersfor there was a Heinz Pickle Factory in the village. The skill of goldbeating was introduced by Christian Shopdach and other German craftsmen around 1852.

Extractions: The Dance of Chance exhibit is a collaboration between the Center for Polymer Studies and the Boston Museum of Science . The exhibit is based on current research pursued by CPS scientists and collaborating scientists around the world. The focus of the exhibit is the emergence of patterns in Nature from physical and biological processes which on the microscopic level appear to be dominated by chance. Each of the kiosks below will lead you into a different facet of the exciting world of patterns in Nature. Many of these patterns are fractals . Fractal forms are ubiquitous in Nature, and especially likely to arise when randomness plays a large role during the pattern's development. The experiments and examples in this exhibit demonstrate some of the many ways that branching patterns arise in Nature from the conflict between random and constraining forces.
