The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is a supervised research degree. A PhD thesis will demonstrate (in the context of a substantial and original contribution) mastery of the subject of concern and well as a furthering of understanding in that field of knowledge. A PhD programme consists of a research project mutually agreed upon by a student, supervisor, Head of Department and the Board of the Postgraduate Research School. The PhD requires the development and implementation of a rigorous research plan, based on a comprehensive understanding of the relevant literature and the need for answers to questions posed in that literature or as the result of a new theory. The thesis arising from the research should show a candidate's ability to document and interpret results, to formulate theories and to discuss the results in the light of the current literature to a level of competence required in published materials. If a department at UWA can provide appropriate supervision, facilities and resources for a research project in a particular field and the Board agrees that an appropriate research topic in that area can be developed then, subject to a candidate satisfying the eligibility requirements, an application for a place in the PhD programme can be made. There are usually no examinable coursework components to a PhD.
