Using common sense in all your business dealings can help protect you from schemers, says Georgia Aycock, Extension resource management specialist with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. Not all strange sales or promotions represent schemes against businesses, but it's important to ask questions of unfamiliar service or sales personnel, telephone promoters or charity appeals. A business that gathers all the facts should be able to separate the scheme from the honest transaction. If you are in doubt about a business proposition, the Better Business Bureau provides the following suggestions: Refuse to make commitments with unknown persons, especially over the telephone or internet. Ask that all advertising propositions, charitable appeals, requests for biographical information and sales pitches of any type be made in writing. When dealing with publications, insist on verifiable circulation figures, details of publication, dates, names ofpublishers, number of paid subscribers, and sample copies.

     Extractions: Get-rich-quick opportunities can be disastrous Have you ever received an unsolicited e-mail, fax, or letter from a Nigerian telling you that he wants to give you a large sum of money in exchange for your help? If so, you're not alone. "Last year, the Nigerian money offer was No. 7 on our Internet fraud list and No. 10 on our telemarketing scam list," says Holly Anderson, director of communications at the National Consumer League (NCL). "In one case, a consumer was told that an individual in Nigeria needed to move $52 million out of the country [by transferring the money into his account]. For providing assistance, [the consumer] would receive 30%, but he needed to supply a personal bank account number and meet the offering party [in person] for a discussion about the funds." Fortunately, the consumer contacted the NCL, which intervened and identified the offer as a hoax. But some people are victimized. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says that biz-op fraud is the fastest-growing fraud in the United States. Plus, the NCL reported that victims of wealth-building scams lost an average of $1,425 in 2000, up from $975 in 1999. They also found that consumers taking the bait of deceptive offerings through e-mails and Websites lost, on average, $412 in 2000, up from $310 in 1999.

The total cost may be twice what you were led to believe. Always book with a reputable company. Investment Swindles A "get rich quick" scheme promises high returns with little or no risk. Typically it will feature some "inside" deal on some exotic commodity such as gemstones, rare coins, oil and gas leases, precious metals, or art. The only ones who will get rich quick here are the swindlers, on your money.

As soon as I read the "DEAR FRIEND" of the first e-mail, I knew it was a scam, but for fun I decided to mislead the criminal into believing that I was falling for his scam. You can read the exchange of e-mails following. This type of fraud is known as the Nigerian Fee scam. In this fraud, the criminal sends you an unsolicited message claiming to have millions of dollars, but he needs your help to secure it, and for your efforts, he will give you a large percentage of it. Unfortunately, gullible people do fall for this scam. Hopefully this page will alert more people and make criminals like "Mike" less successful.
