Links What It Is, What It Isn't Sarcoidosis is a relatively rare autoimmune disease that can affect the skin, lungs, heart, brain and nervous system, eyes, and other organs. Although the disease was first recognized about 100 years ago, little is known about what causes it and there is no cure. As an autoimmune disease, sarcoidosis is similar to diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus in how it behaves and how it is treated. Depending on the severity, treatment may be needed to control what sarcoidosis does. Sarcoidosis can go dormant on its own or with treatment, and its symptoms often do not recur after the initial onset. In a small percentage of cases, sarcoidosis is chronic, requiring on-going treatment, with possible occurrence in other organ systems. Chronic sarcoidosis is apparently cyclic in its activity level, with flares of symptoms and more dormant periods lasting weeks or months. No markers have been identified as indicating how sarcoidosis is going to behave in any individual or how an individual with sarcoidosis is going to respond to treatment, although a physician experienced with sarcoidosis may be able to make a "good guess" based on his or her experience. Whether he or she is willing to voice that guess is another story entirely! Despite a century of research, little is known about sarcoidosis. Research has discovered what it is not. Among other things, it is not a cancer or tuberculosis or AIDS-related. It is not caused by pine pollen or other identifiable agents like pollution, airborne or otherwise. It is not progressive or contagious. You did not get it from someone else and you cannot give it to another person. As far as we know, nothing you did specifically caused your sarcoidosis.

Extractions: Typical sarcoidosis symptoms include shortness of breath and coughing that won''t go away. But sarcoidosis symptoms can also show up suddenly with the appearance of skin rashes. Red bumps on the face, arms, or shins, and inflammation of the eyes are also common sarcoidosis symptoms. It is not unusual, however, for sarcoidosis symptoms to be more general. Weight loss, fatigue, night sweats, fever, or just an overall feeling of ill health can also be clues to the disease. I Need Immediate Info.

I was diagnosed with Sarcoids in January, 1999. After extensive tests I was told I had the disease only in my lungs. The fact that I have this disease amazed my Doctors because according to studies this disease only affects Afro-Americans and Caucasion of European backgrounds especially Scandanavian. I would like to know more information on this disease; I have only been told it is rare. My physician just said that it is a type of lung infection that could go into remission just as it occured. From reading the comments that doesn't seem to be true. September 08, 1999 - Alka

Nov - Dec, 1997 February 24, 1998 - Christopher I have pulmonary sarcoidosis. The more I find out about this disease the more I become scared and anxious. My doctor wants me to start on steroids (prednisone) but I am scared of possible side affects. My questions are; are there support groups in the Buffalo NY area, what are the real side effects of prednisone, where can I get more information? Thank You. February 24, 1998 - Sherri I mainly have a question: My sarcoidosis is seemingly chronic, as I have been plagued now for at least 6 years with continual problems and symptoms without a break; although it does seem to move from organ to organ. Because I have hepatitis C, as well as Sarcoidosis, I can not do the therapies for either one as one therapy can exacerbate the other disease. So if anyone knows of a therapy to do for Sarcoidosis, that will NOT decrease my immune system, it would help me to know. Also - I have been diagnosed now, by a liver biopsy, with it in my liver along with the hepatitis C. I just had a tongue biopsy - as my tongue has had a lesion growing on it, that my dentist suspects sarcoid. I've never heard of that; has anyone else? February 24, 1998 - Ruth

Extractions: The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) is the average daily dietary intake level that is sufficient to meet the nutrient requirements of nearly all (97 to 98 percent) healthy individuals in each life-stage and gender group (10). The 1998 RDAs for folate are expressed in a term called the Dietary Folate Equivalent. The Dietary Folate Equivalent (DFE) was developed to help account for the differences in absorption of naturally occurring dietary folate and the more bioavailable synthetic folic acid (11). Media CFS Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Diagnosing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome is based on the presence of unexplained exhaustion that is not improved by sleep or rest, persists for three to six months, and causes an all-over weakness and lack of energy so severe that it interferes with normal living. The first step in diagnosing chronic fatigue syndrome is to rule out any underlying conditions, including psychological disorders, that may be contributing to the problem. Some of the other illnesses that can cause excessive fatigue are: hypothyroidism, anemia, Lyme disease, and chronic hepatitis. (See the differential diagnosis below.) 1994 Revised Case Definition Of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) Major Criteria A case of chronic fatigue syndrome must include the presence of the following: 1. Clinically evaluated, unexplained, persistent, or relapsing chronic fatigue that is of new or definite onset (has not been lifelong); is not the result of ongoing exertion; is not substantially alleviated by rest; and results in substantial reduction in previous levels of occupational, educational, social, or personal activities.
Folic Acid - Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, asthma, sarcoidoisis, primary biliary cirrhosis, and inflammatory bowel http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folic_acid
Extractions: edit Since the discovery of the link between insufficient folic acid and NTDs, governments and health organisations worldwide have made recommendations concerning folic acid supplementation for women intending to become pregnant. For example, the US Public Health service (see the URL given at page foot) recommends an extra 0.4mg/day, which can be taken as a pill. However, many researchers believe that supplementation in this way can never work effectively enough since not all pregnancies are planned and not all women will comply with the recommendation. This has led to the introduction in many countries of fortification , where folic acid is added to flour with the intention of everyone benefiting from the associated raise in blood folate levels. This is not uncontroversial, with issues having been raised concerning individual liberty, and the masking effect of folate fortification on B12 deficiency or pernicious anaemia . However, most North and South American countries now fortify their flour, along with a number of Middle Eastern countries and Indonesia. Mongolia and a number of ex-Soviet republics are amongst those having widespread voluntary fortification; about five more countries (including Morocco, the first African country) have agreed but not yet implemented fortification. The UK has recently decided not to fortify, mainly because of the B12 concern; indeed, no EU country has yet fortified.

Extractions: My Mom. Before we knew my mom had Hodgkin's, she would sweat at night, sometimes had a fever and was very tired. Doctor V later felt small bumps in her neck -behind her ear. She had the bumps looked at in August of 1998, and we then found out she had Hodgkin's Lymphoma. My mom had undergone several different chemo regimens since then. During July 1999 she had a stem-cell transplant to rid her body of Hodgkin's. Most people that are treated for Hodgkin's do not need to resort to a stem cell transplant. It is a very strong form of chemotherapy with a dose 5 times as strong as other treatments. Here is a picture of my Mom when she went to the hospital to have her stem cells collected. She was in the bone marrow unit of the hospital for all of July 1999. During this time she was in a special germ-free unit, had round the clock nurses, and was on a special low micro-organism diet. She had trouble swallowing, eating, and keeping food down during this time, but quickly regained her strength. The stem cell transplant went well and my mom was able to recover quite nicely. After being home for several months, she began radiation therapy. With radiation there was a whole new set of side-effects.

Medical Encyclopedia A deficiency of folate, vitamin B12, or vitamin B6 may increase your level of homocysteine, an amino acid normally found in your blood. There is evidence that an elevated homocysteine level is an independent risk factor for heart disease and stroke (30 - 41). The evidence suggests that high levels of homocysteine may damage coronary arteries or make it easier for blood clotting cells called platelets to clump together and form a clot (36). However, there is currently no evidence available to suggest that lowering homocysteine with vitamins will reduce your risk of heart disease. Clinical intervention trials are needed to determine whether supplementation with folic acid, vitamin B12 or vitamin B6 can lower your risk of developing coronary heart disease.
