The Americans dominated most of the athletics events (they won 9 out of the 15 events), while the Germans were superior in gymnastics, and the French in cycling. However the disappointment of the Greeks was soon forgotten when Spyros Louis managed to win the marathon. Paris 1900 These Games took part at the same time when the World Fair was being organized, and the organizers of this Fair, did all they could so that the Olympic Games would not steal the show. The Paris Games lasted 5 months, and because of this the interest in the Games were not high. No adequate sports stadia were built and the Games were held at the track of the Racing Club de France at the Bois de Boulogne. However the standard of the athletes was already getting better. Water polo was one of the sports in this edition.

Moth History Summary The International Moth holds the current world record for the furthest south a sailing craft has ever ventured. A photo of the Moth, designed by Hal Wagstaff and built by his brother Gary in Wellington NZ, hangs even today in the Antartic base at McMurdo Sound. The King of Siam once sailed the Thai Moth he built and designed himself, in a Moth regatta in the UK. It all began in 1928 when the late Len Morris built a cat rigged (single sail) flat bottomed scow to sail on Andersons' Inlet at Inverloch, a seaside resort, 130km from Melbourne in Australia. She was hard chined, was eleven foot long, and carried 80 sq ft in single mainsail. The craft was named "Olive" after his wife. The constuction was timber with an internal construction somewhat like Hargreave's box kite.

(the Shoreham Sailing Club story continued) We were lucky as in 1956 the new coal burning power station came into operation, the harbour mouth nearly doubled in width to allow colliers access, prior to this it was often difficult to get in and out. We were able to get free of charge the ash from the power station, at that time they were more that happy to dump the ash on our land. The area was raised many feet and it proved to be a good fill, we finished it off with a grass tennis court taken form a garden in Woodley Road, Worthing. We made a rolled wooden slipway which we used for many years, each weekend we would unroll this cumbersome thing , it was very unsatisfactory but in those days Merlin Rockets had handles. It was hard work hauling them up and down the beach. Ananova - Olympic Sport Guide - Sailing olympic history. sailing or olympic Yachting as it was called, was scheduled forthe first Modern olympic Games in 1896 but was cancelled due to the weather. http://www.ananova.com/sport/story/sm_43444.html
Extractions: Ananova: Olympic sport guide - Sailing A guide to the Olympic sport of Sailing Competition details The different crafts used for sailing at the Olympic Games can be grouped into four main types: Mistral The Mistral is a type of windsurfer, consisting of a board with a mast and sail. The sailor controls the mast and sail with arms and steers with body weight, moving in a standing position. Dinghy Finn, Europe, Laser, 49er and 470 classes are dinghies, characterised by a lifting centreboard and have either a single sail (una) rig, for the Finn, Europe and Laser or two sail (sloop) rig for the 470 class. 470s and the high performance 49er's also have an additional downwind sail called a spinnaker. Dinghies are steered by a rudder and the crew use their body weight as leverage to counterbalance forces developed by the rig. At the Olympic Games, the Finn is used only in men's events, whilst the Europe only in women's events. The 470 is a men's and women's event, the Laser and 49er's are open events. Keel boats The Soling and Star classes are both keel boats. Keel boats have a ballasted fin fixed below the hull (keel) and the Soling has a spinnaker. Soling and Star are both open events at the Games. The medals in the sailing class are decided by a match racing knock-out competition.

Extractions: About Us News Contact Details Committee Members ... Home History of the Club The Sandy Bay Sailing Club started life on 1 March 1948 as the Sandy Bay Dinghy Club operating from Red Chapel Beach, half a kilometre or so towards the city from our current location. The Club moved to Long Point and the current clubhouse in the early 1960s. The clubhouse has been extensively modified since then to provide comprehensive facilities for its 1990s members. Long Point provides the Club with a unique environment where races can be conducted in clear view of the clubhouse and the beach while at the same time offering fair courses in all but the most demanding conditions. Over the years the Club has catered for a wide range of yacht classes. By far the most enduring is the International Cadet. The Cadet, crewed by two junior (U/18) sailors, is supported as a training class by the single-handed International Optimist. Both of these boats are ideal trainers and both are supported by full international status, with the World Championship as the pinnacle in each. The International Cadet World Championship has been conducted at Sandy Bay twice in the Club's history; the first in 1969-70 and the second in 1994-5. Over a dozen countries sent teams of up to 7 boats to contest this keenly fought series in typically-testing Derwent River conditions.
