Extractions: This Farm Health and Safety Checklist has been prepared by the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture with financial assistance from the Canadian Agricultural Safety Program (CASP) and the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods. The project was initiated by the Newfoundland and Labrador Farm Safety Committee, comprised of government and industry representatives, and working under the auspices of CASP. In February, responsibility for carrying out the project was transferred from the Committee to the Federation which willingly accepted this task, recognizing that farmers may prefer to participate in a project dealing with such sensitive issues as farm safety if it was conducted by the industry itself. As such, the Federation assures complete anonymity and confidentiality for any participating farmer. Government agencies, especially the Food and Agriculture Branch of the Department of Fisheries, Food and Agriculture, fully support our farm health and safety initiative. Their interest has been further demonstrated through cooperation to ensure that a Farm Safety Seminar be held in conjunction with the upcoming Annual General Meeting of the Federation in mid-March. The Federation appreciates the Department's continuing interest in farm safety issues. The cooperation and assistance of the Canadian Coalition for Agricultural Safety and Rural Health, through the Canadian Agricultural Safety Program, must also be recognized. It is hoped that the Newfoundland Farm Health and Safety Project will continue to be conducted in harmony with the Coalition's efforts nationally.

This question is often heard by the food safety specialists answering USDAs Meat and Poultry Hotline. Although the optimum freezing time for quality best flavor and texture is 1 year, consumers are usually surprised to learn that, from a safety standpoint, frozen turkeys may be kept indefinitely in a freezer. Callers ask hundreds of other questions about turkeys from the time they are hatched on the farm until they make it home to the freezer. Although turkey is enjoyed year round, the peak time for buying, cooking, and storing whole turkeys is the November and December holiday season. This is the time we see a large increase in the number of whole turkeys for sale in our local grocery stores. To ensure that the supply of whole birds is adequate to meet consumer holiday demands, each year during the month of May, millions of turkey eggs are put into incubators. After about 4 weeks of incubation, a baby turkey (poult) is hatched. The poults are then moved from the hatcheries to barns that are environmentally controlled, providing maximum protection from predators, disease, and bad weather. For the next 4 to 5 months (depending on the desired market weight), these turkeys roam freely around the barn, eating their way through many pounds of feed (consisting mainly of corn and soybean meal along with a supplement of vitamins and minerals).

Extractions: Developing A Farm Play Safe Program Agriculture is one of the most unique industries because it combines the home environment and the work environment. It also makes the farm one of the most dangerous environments for children. Without a conscious separation by parents and farm managers of the twofold environment of the farm, children can be exposed to tremendous risks. Careful planning and guidance from adults is needed in order to reduce the risks to children living on farms. There is a familiarity which we all have for "hometurf" which sometimes breeds contempt for proper due care and attention when it comes to safety. This is borne out in accident statistics that show the majority of car accidents occur within 10 Km of home. When one combines "hometurf" security with the farm home as a production centre where children are closely tie to the operation both in proximity as well as in work chores, the farm can be a dangerous place for young children. Fatal injuries to children generally are related to their entrance into an area where the operator is not expecting younger children. Many children are also injured while working. Injury scenarios can include tractor rollovers, falls from equipment or ladders, and entanglement in power take-off shafts and other machine components such as augers. The best method in protecting farm children is for parents to provide leadership in the development of a farm play safe program with children. It is important that the children participate in the development of this safety program so that they can feel part of the program and not come to see it as more rules imposed by MOM and DAD. Obviously the degree of participation will have to be age appropriate.
