Extractions: The creation of the world is the great cosmogonic paradigm, the most important thing the Gods ever did and the model for all which we should do. This cosmogony, although a spatial creation, also took place at a certain "time." Hence, we find the notion of sacred time . The term for sacred time is chairos , while the term for "normal" (profane, quotidian) time is chronos When the Gods created space, they also created time. First of all, time could not begin until those things which measure it came into existence; likewise when space disappears, it will be the end of time. This at first seems strange to us because we have separated time from space; we consult watches or calendars, not the sun or the moon, to gauge time. But if we think about it, we realize how closely the two are related. For example, a year is not 365 days; in fact, a year is almost six hours longer which is why there is need for an extra day every four years (leap year). A year is actually the time it takes the earth to orbit the sun. If, by some chance, that time were shortened by one week to 358 days and we did not alter the calendar, within a dozen years the first day of spring would fall on what is now the first day of winter. When you measure time by space, you see how much goes in cycles. Every day the sun rises, climbs into the sky, hits its peak, descends, sets, disappears, and then rises the next day. Every month the moon waxes and wanes; every year the earth goes through the cycle of the seasons. This led some traditional societies to speak of time itself as cyclical (e.g., Hindu culture). Eastern cultures in general are inclined toward this view of time.

I do not wish to trail, here, behind news reports, whose only aim is to highlight the thrilling and the unusual with a view to draw universal attention. The question is much more important and deeper than we anticipate. Therefore, I shall try to embark on the discussion of an idea that has long turned up over and over again in my mind. It is that of the sacred place, while leaving the concept of the sacred time aside, as I hope to lay a firm foundation for the idea of the sacred human being. In the Holy Bible we also find this concept in some texts that spoke about places of refuge for killers who did not commit a premeditated murder or the innocent who are accused, as they all could get there for protection so that their lives are spared and they avoid harm. In Deuteronomy , God said to the people: Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live; Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly God approved this law so That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, and so blood be upon thee. Extractions: Hegi draws you into the lives of three women Leonora, her sister-in-law, Floria, and Floria's daughter, Belinda and Anthony, Leonora's son. Following the death of her husband, Malcolm, Floria is forced to move in with her brother and his family (Leonora and Anthony), bringing her twin daughters who share Anthony's bedroom with him. As any young boy approaching his teenage years would be, Anthony is quite put out by having to share his room. But in a strange twist of fate, Anthony may have been responsible for Bianca's death. The death of a twin sibling is usually quite traumatic for the surviving twin, but Belinda and Floria begin an emotional tip-toeing that leaves each unaware of the fact that they are coping, and that life does indeed go on following trauma.

In the Tempus Exhibition, there is an extraordinary array of things, cleverly conceived and beautifully made, that measure time and its passing. The question that focussing upon 'sacred time' raises is, essentially, why is time worth measuring? What is its interest? This moves us back a stage, from how to measure to why measure, and so to the questions behind the questions - which is one way of describing what is called 'Metaphysics'. The way I will approach the topic is to outline the various kinds of time that are to be found in the Bible, and to draw attention to what I call their 'logic': how they work, and some of their implications. Extractions: I decided to read this book mostly because of the title as a Trekker who is also Jewish, I was interested to see what these authors had to say about "sacred time," because, as Abraham Joshua Heschel said, we Jews live more in sacred time than in sacred places. So, any book with "sacred time" in the title is bound to catch my eye. As it turned out, their definition of "sacred time" wasnt quite the same as the Jewish one, but I still enjoyed the book. Its an excellent analysis of Star Trek from an anthropology POV. Especially useful to me was the clear, concise explanation of what "traditional," "modernist," and "post-modernist" worldviews mean in terms of how various cultures view time and the future. I had heard TOS called "modernist" and DS9 called "post-modernist" before, but could never really get a grasp on what that meant, exactly. (What can I say? Im in the over-50 generation and havent always kept up on the latest buzzwords.) This book clearly explained all three POVs traditional, modern, and post-modern then put them into the context of various Trek episodes. Great job!

Bought a beaded lamp and an alarm clock to replace the desk lamp and bose (Christmas present of 2000). Put my books on the bedside table. There. Just so. And I wonder how long I'll sleep on one side of the bed. Endings need to be acknowledged, as do beginnings. Elaine suggested that before he left, we should say something we'd miss about each other. Without a beat he said, "Your cooking, your eyes and your smile." I responded, "The way you are with the boys, patience and security." Then it was enough to say goodnight and see you tomorrow. Beginnings... When Elaine and Curt and Benny (and later the twins) lived here in Rochester, we had Sunday dinners. Curt's idea. The family would get together at alternating houses and commit to having that meal as a unit. We're going to do that again. It's a good ritual. First one at Jim's new place - dubbed "The Ranch". It may get a different moniker, but we're trying that one on for size. Talked with Martin a bit and described this process. He said it sounded like sacred time. That seems so right.
