Extractions: We're driving down the highway in the southeast, where many an RV dealership can be seen right from the road, and on the way south noticed an extensive stretch of RVs and trailer stock that caught our eye. Not enough time to check it out on our way down, we kept an eye out on the trip north, found the exit, and followed our instinct to the service road where the RV/Trailer dealer was located. Closed at the time we arrived, we took a few moments to look over their inventory that was visible on the front lot. Wow. What we saw were what might be called 'professional' RVs - these utilitarian trailers in the form of Class A motorhomes were slick and sleek, looking ready for those who want to do business in or with an RV. By professional, what we mean is that there's nothing 'homey' about them. If you like the chrome well polished, and a tough ready to haul chassis, these are definitely worth a look. The exteriors were solid white, allowing for commercialized graphics to be easily applied. The trim is diamond plate chrome. The power plant on these units in the lot ranged from an International Harvestor, to Kenworth and a Chevrolet. Upon further investigation these units can be delivered in several configurations; all built to meet the most strenuous needs of RV haulers on the roads. The Renegade units are configured as a complete motorhome up to 28 feet, or in a range of setups that allow for the 'TotorHome' option so that an additional full size trailer can be towed behind the RV unit. Quite impressive, it's an RV that fits the need of the mobile workplace that's burgeoning today. We hope to configure one that will allow for mobile office travel along with a portable video editing studio. The combination of strength, and streamline stylings makes this an obvious choice for those RVers who 'mean business'!

Extractions: Founder, A'Weigh We Go Sometimes it takes a tragedy, like the recent fatal motorhome accidents, to wake us up to something that we really already knew we should be concerned about, but just never gave it a priority. After all, bad things only happen to other people, right? After 8 years and having weighed more that 10,000 RVs, I can tell you with confidence that thousands of RVers are traveling down the road on overloaded tires that could fail at any time, with potentially catastrophic results. Does this alarm you? I HOPE SO! And, if your safety doesn't concern you, how about the fact that operating on our highways over a tire rating is in violation of government regulations? Does that concern you? Does the fact that members of our RV family are dying on the highway hit close to home? A'Weigh We Go is a POSITIVE SAFETY EDUCATION Program, and it is not our style nor intention to endorse or condemn any product or manufacturer. We accomplish our goals through education! I don't normally write "alarming" articles, but sometimes we feel extremely frustrated when we don't seem to be getting our message across, and when we are in possession of information that not only can save lives, but can predict the loss of life! Our goal is to ensure that every RV owner understands tire loading limitations and VERIFIES that his or her coach is operated safely. I recognize that not everyone has an opportunity to attend an A'Weigh We Go Safety Seminar, so let's review the basics.

Driving a 10+ ton rig can be done with safety after you get proper education and a little experience. Physical size or stature is not important; but health, alertness, mature judgment, dexterity, driving experience and common sense are. There is a reason that professional drivers of trucks and buses are required to get appropriate initial training, licensing and continued training. That reason is to reduce the risks related to driving heavy vehicles on our highway and byways. As you know, RV'ers are not required to get any special license or any training, but in my opinion, they should. This is not because I like more Government involvement in our lives. It's because it is unsafe for an inexperienced driver to just jump into a 10+ ton RV and start driving. We should all get the proper drivers education and experience to be a safe RV driver. We should also actively improve our skills.

Extractions: Recreation Vehicle Safety Education Foundation (RVSEF) After weighing more than 10,000 RVs during a seven-year span, I can tell you with confidence that a significant number of motorhomers are traveling down the road on overloaded tires that could fail at any time, with potentially catastrophic results. Finding the ratings Tires, like most manufactured products, are designed to operate within a specific load; we call this "tire load rating." One the sidewall of your motorhome's tires you will find a rating for a single application (the front axle or tag axle of your motorhome) and a dual tire rating (usually the drive wheels). Each rating is accompanied by an inflation pressure that, if used, will give you the stated rating. This does not mean that this inflation pressure is correct for your motorhome. Because RVs can be configured and loaded in various ways, inflation pressure must be set based on the load being carried by the tire, if you wish to achieve optimum life and performance from you tires.

Some RV appliances can operate on either electricity source and/or propane gas. Anode Rod: When used in a water heater, an anode rod attracts corrosion causing products in the water. These products attack the anode rod instead of the metal tank itself. The anode rod should be inspected yearly and changed when it is reduced to about 1/4 of its original size. The rods are used in steel water heater tanks: an aluminum tank has an inner layer of anode metal to accomplish the same thing. Anode rods should not be installed in an aluminum tank. Axle Ratio: The ratio between the pinion and ring gears in the differential that multiply the torque provided by the engine. It is the number of drive line revolutions required to turn the axle one time. For example, with a 4.10:1 axle the drive line turns 4.1 times for each full axle revolution. The higher the number, the more torque and thus more towing power. However, higher axle ration also mean less speed.

Unfortunately, when their spouses have heart attacks, strokes or die, the RV sits in the driveway for a few months and then typically goes up for sale. The widow often ends up taking a loss on the sale. The trips are now but a memory of the life she loved. Living With Your RV Wind Drag
