Such basic values as emotionality not-having-control, irrationality, and judgemental attitudes towards world and other people may but often have significant influence on the success or failure of intercultural workplace communication, effectiveness of management style, and the outcome of business negotiations. This paper looks at the cases when Russian basic cultural values show up through linguistic choices shaping language production in the workplace, which are consequently misattributed by Western partners. No matter what the language of intercultural communication is - Russian, or English, or German - the meaning of many language expressions may be reconstructed wrongly by the representative of another culture. One of the main reasons for these pragmatic errors is The Politeness Principle applied differently as compared to one's native culture. Yet another - subdivisions within the Russian culture into three main subtypes: T(traditional), S (soviet), and W(westernized).

As an adherent of the French philosophers of the time, Catherine II patronized the development of the arts and sciences in Russia. In 1764, construction of the building of the newly-established Academy of Arts was begun (architects Vallin de La Mothe and A. F. Kakorinov). Over many years, numerous talented Russian architects, artists, and sculptors graduated from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, which became a centre for the dissemination of progressive ideas, the ideas of the Enlightenment. According to academic doctrine, painting was the most important genre , although under Catherine II portraiture was of particular significance. The Hermitage portrait gallery of the second half of the 18th century presents individuals from various levels of Russian society; it includes formal portraits of Catherine the Great, of statesmen and courtiers, servicemen, clergymen and numerous persons who were prominent in various fields. These portraits were created both by Russian artists and foreigners who came to work in Russia. Today we can still derive great pleasure from these fine portraits by Fyodor Rokotov, Vasily Borovikovsky, and others, including the most splendid portrait-painter of the mid-18th century, Dmitry Levitsky. His portraits of general-in-chief M. N. Krechetnikov and of a rich merchant from the town of Kaluga, Ivan Bilibin the Elder, and his son Yakov Bilibin the Younger, reveal the splendour of the individual.

Locked in the never-ending war with nomads prince Vladimir tries to unite them around Kiev. In his first attempt he tried to use paganism. He builds up a gallery of local pagan gods, trying to achieve some kind of union and establish certain hierarchy on the symbolic level. Seeing the futility of these attempts, however, he drops pagan faith altogether and adopts Byzantine (Orthodox) Christianity, which is not dependent on local gods.

About 12,000 people, including dependents and family members, are in the service of the Consular Department of the former and future Russian Embassy, of Russian official institutions and enterprises and units registered with the Embassy. The Russian-speaking Jewish community amounts to 12,000 former Soviet citizens, and their relatives and guests etc. who do not live in Berlin permanently. Finally there are appr. 1.5 million Soviet immigrants of German descent, and the younger generation is more at home in Russian than in German. While these immigrants settled almost exclusively in Western Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall, this changed after 1990, and a considerable part remained in Brandenburg. There are also not a few Russian students in Berlin as the Free University concluded a cooperation agreement with St. Petersburg University quite a long time ago.
