    Extractions: This group show is subterranean in two ways: all the artists are bubbling under the radar of the established art world and the exhibit space is located two flights below street level making for a truly underground experience. The artists here are all young and of Russian extraction and are living in the New York, Philadelphia or New Jersey areas. As show coordinator Anna Repp (who at the opening was resplendent in a beautiful green gown) put it, "We're all friends and recently out of school. We all went to Pratt, where they don't give everyone a senior show." Repp sought to create an environment with this show and that she did; the artwork hanging among the stone walls gives the impression of a cabin filled with visual treasure.

    Extractions: The idea behind this collection is to show the development of Soviet Art from Stalin to Gorbachev. Represented artists belong to three generations. The first generation was born at the turn of the century and belongs to the "gold fund" of the Russian and Western art and culture. D.Mitrokhin, V.Lebedev, A.Kaplan and M.Abeghian are represented in the collection. The third generation was born in 30-40s. Represented artists are V.Kalinin, L.Avedissian, E.Karazian, V.Khrushch. They are all well known in both Europe and America. A lot of works of mentioned artists were bought by famous museums such as the Russian Museum in St.Petersburg, the Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow, the Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Pompidou Center in Paris and other museums and private collectors around the world. A lot of works from this collection are reproduced in monographs and art books devoted to contemporary Russian Art.

The Russian Neo-Primitivists looked to Russia's traditional art forms, such as the lubok [a popular woodcut] and the icon. Another leader of Neo-Primitivism in the Russian avant-garde was Natalia Goncharova, who explained, "I shook off the dust of the West. I turned away from the West because for me personally it had dried up and because my sympathies lie with the East." Although Mikhail Larionov and Natalia Goncharova are known as the most prominent promoters of Neo-Primitivism, many of their artistic peers passed through a Neo-Primitivist stage.

    Extractions: From the mid-eighteenth century, the Russian school of painting and sculpture had been controlled by the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. In the relatively liberal atmosphere of Alexander II's "Great Reforms," there was growing discontent among some artists with the traditionally conservative attitude of the Academy of Arts. In 1863, a group of students at the Academy rebelled at the proposed topic for the annual Gold Medal painting competition: "The Entrance of Odin into Valhalla." They felt that this mythological fantasy was too remote from the real life of Russia that, they believed, demanded their artistic attention. Thirteen painters and one sculptor resigned from the Academy. Soon after they withdrew from the Academy, these "Thirteen Contestants" formed an Artists' Cooperative Society. In 1870, they formed the "Society for Traveling Art Exhibitions," and the painters became known as " Peredvizhniki " (in English, they are known as "Wanderers" or "Travelers" or "Itinerants." The

    Extractions: Early Russian Art Early Russian Art and the Andrei Rublev Museum Art connoisseurs began to show interest in early Russian icons towards the middle of the 19th century. Early Russian art first became the object of collecting in the middle of the 19th century. At that time connoisseurs took an interest in objects which, as a rule, dated from the 17th century or more recent periods. Older icon were hardly visible under oil-varnish which blackened with time. Quite often the original painting was hidden under coats of paint from subsequent years. In the 1870s, a new technique of restoration made it possible to reveal the original layers of paint. Icons thus restored were bought for large private collections. From 1890 several small exhibitions of old icons were held during archaeological congresses. A more representative exhibition was held in 1913. In early Russia an icon was not only part of the adornment of a church,but an indispensable article in every home. Icons were placed in living rooms, over outer gates, on doors leading to the stables, at wells and on road sign-posts to keep off the evil spirit. Icons belonging to rich people or prosperous churches were often covered with silver or golden trimmings ( oklad )which concealed the background and outside surface. Glass image cases
