Extractions: Tuesday, October 01 2002 5:26 A decision on whether to introduce golf and seven-a-side rugby at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will not be taken until next year. It had been thought the issue would be discussed at the International Olympic Committee congress slated for Mexico in November. However, IOC president Jacques Rogge revealed today in Monaco that the issue will not be addressed until the IOC's congress in Prague in July 2003. The sports' inclusion in the Games was backed by the body overseeing programme selection at a meeting in Lausanne on August 29th. However, the commission said it favoured their arrival "on condition that the sports put forward their best athletes". Meanwhile, a decision is expected on the removal of the pentathlon, baseball and softball from the Olympics at the November congress. Filed by James Boylan.

Extractions: The All Blacks The All Blacks are seeded number two in the 2003 Rugby World Cup. New Zealanders will be hoping that they can go one better and win the Webb Ellis trophy as they did in the first ever Rugby World Cup in 1987. Since 1987, New Zealand has been third, second, and fourth in successive World Cups. After winning the Bledisloe Cup and the Tri Nations series in August, New Zealand's hopes are running high for this year's World Cup. For the All Blacks, 2003 has been a year of change. Coach John Mitchell and his team of selectors have opted for a number of new faces in the squad over some of New Zealand's most recognised and senior All Blacks. Many of the exclusions have been controversial, and have provoked comment amongst New Zealand and international rugby commentators. Also controversial has been the decision to place the All Black squad in a training camp leading up to the World Cup, rather than having players participate in the National Provincial Championship (NPC). However, we will have to wait until the All Blacks' performance in their first pool match on 11 October to see if this speculation is justified or proved wrong!

Message-ID: Nntp-Posting-Host: sss330.canterbury.ac.nz Organization: Department of Mathematics, University of Canterbury Date: Tue, 5 Oct 1993 01:36:59 GMT There have been a large number of "I-seem-to-recall-reading-about-this" posts. Here at last is some genuine info about this olympic rugby matter, straight from "The Guiness Book of Rugby Records", which I have *here* in my office, alongside the keyboard, right now ! It has been laboriously typed in by me, for the benefit of all, (kindly send donations to the address below). [irrelevant comments deleted] Introduced by Baron Pierre de Coubertin (who refereed the first ever French championship final), rugby was on the Olympic program at Paris in 1900, at London in 1908, Antwerp in 1920, and Paris again in 1924. In 1928 the I.O.C. turned down the request to stage rugby at the Amsterdam games. Three factors were believed to be behind this: the IOC wanted more emphasis on individual sports; women's athletics had swollen the number of competitors; and the sport did not receive the backing that it should have from the British entries. Both the Soviet Union in 1980 and South Korea in 1988 made attempts to have rugby readmitted, and it should be pointed out that South Korea came desparately close to achieving their aim. Sevens Rugby Could Become Olympic Sport Says Rogge Sevens rugby could become olympic sport says Rogge. Wednesday, 19Nov-2003 1040PMPST. Story from AFP Copyright 2003 by Agence France-Presse (via ClariNet). http://quickstart.clari.net/qs_se/webnews/wed/cn/Qrugbyu-wc2003-oly-rogge.RBK7_D
Extractions: SYDNEY, Nov 20 (AFP) - Sevens rugby could become an Olympic sport announced International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge on Thursday if another sport was dropped and it met the strict critieria required by his body. ClariNews Bring users back to your site twice as often - and they'll stay 3 times as long! The Belgian former Olympic yachtsman and rugby international ruled out the XV version making it as there too few teams capable of making it competitive but he added sevens - which along with golf is on the official 'waiting list' - was viable. "If we would go to a tournament of about 16 countries you would have these very big scores like we had in the preliminaries of the World Cup," he said. "That is something that is not interesting for the two weeks of the Olympic Games. "In sevens you have a far broader elite you have at least 15 countries that are really world class which is not the case in (15-man game)," added the former orthopaedic surgeon, who is due to attend the World Cup final between Australia and England on Saturday. Rogge ruled out a XV tournament - which was dropped after the 1924 Games when the United States beat France for gold - with just eight teams competing because he said the players needed too long to recuperate between games and with the Olympics just a fortnight long it wouldn't be practical.
