A former student came back to teach me Photoshop and showed me her blog and some of the community of bloggers that she was involved with. I wanted to try blogging and see how it works, then possibly set something up at my middle school next Fall. The meeting was great! A lot of good ideas. A lot of friendly helpful people ready and willing to talk about how to do it and what they had done with it. The next thing is to work on is how this will work for my students! I am a Seattle resident attending 5 NECC workshops in 3 days. I also need to get in some time at the exhibits, because that is one of the best parts of the conference! I have been to a Generation Y class, where I learned about teaching students to become technology support for teachers. (Some schools used it with students as young as 3rd grade.) The kids collaborate with a willing teacher partner to create something the teacher can use with a lesson of their choice. One student in high school created a web page that talked about a "Rube Goldberg" project, with links to pages about simple machines, who was Goldberg, and details of the project, including a rubric. A middle school student created a PowerPoint show about Coral reefs including links and an assessment. Some students found a list of websites about the teacher's topic. The teacher and student set up the project and the student then worked it out checking back with the partner teacher and under that supervision of the Gen.Y teacher. It looks like a very promising program!

And after being knocked over, I tried to do it again. Hmm, maybe there is something wrong with me (that's a affirmative). So in my quest to both bother my parents for all I was worth, and to learn more about electricity, I received a crystal radio kit for Christmas when I was about four. Is that weird? I thought it was awesome and I would be running around all day trying out different antennas. What's more, the radio still works today. And to top it off, I was annoying. I used to think I was reincarnated from Thomas Edison or Nicola Tesla. Well I don't think that's true any more. It turns out those guys were kind of nutty.

Designed as a one-credit orientation course for freshmen, GE 197 exposed freshman students to examples of leadership, career selection, and college survival skills. Funded by the Reinvestments Through Efficiencies budget, PPES seeks to help those students succeed who by all indications should succeed according to their ACT test scores. The dropout rate for engineering students is relatively high at many engineering institutions. Although not a stated goal, increasing the retention rate of engineering students is expected to occur if the program is successful. By linking educational experiences across the curriculum, the faculty team anticipates that participating students will make better connections with curricular materials, will be better able to apply their knowledge and technical skills to new problems, and will be more motivated to learn and make the sacrifices necessary to become engineers and scientists. The vision of PPES is to provide a new culture for engineering/science education in which students and faculty work in partnership to produce an enduring foundation for student development and life-long learning.

Olin College of Engineering, the first US engineering school in four decades to be created from the ground up, is like witnessing a collective academic bungee jump. Leighton Ige, a high school valedictorian from Hawaii, could have gone to Harvard last fall. Instead, he came to a muddy construction site as one of 30 new "Olin partners." Along with faculty and a cadre of other math and science wunderkinder, these adventurous students are spending this year creating a new model for undergraduate engineering education. Through innovative design projects like the recent attempt to build the world's largest Rube Goldberg machine, faculty say they will develop a curriculum that both inspires students and causes lessons to stick like super glue, rather than being quickly forgotten. Inspiration does not seem to be a problem. Like most of the young partners here, Mr. Ige happily works around the clock for no class credit. His 16- to 20-hour days are typical for many students. In essence, they are voluntary curriculum guinea pigs for the school's first 22 faculty members.

Extractions: Student Self-Evaluations At first the amount of independence we were given in this class did not work for me. My first few creations were not successful because I would come up with an elaborate plan and spend so much time building it that I didn't have enough time left over to make it work. But I definitely learned from my mistakes. I learned to start with a simple base and then add on as time allowed. This class was difficult for me in a different way than any other class. I was so involved in this class and my projects that I found it hard to stop working on an assignment. I am always happy when I finally finish an essay or a book but it was incredibly frustrating to have to stop working on something even if it wasn't quite where I wanted it to be. I am proud of the work I did in this class and feel like I am taking a lot away. Inventions has been one of my favorite classes while at Urban and I feel that I have been very successful in this class even though a few of my projects didn't finish with an end result. I enjoyed learning something new about inventions and about completing a given task during each project. The series of simple machine parts was especially interesting and I managed to build a nice wooded "cam" device which I was proud of. After using wood in the simple machine project, I was ambitious to add craftsmanship to all my inventions and this has been something that I have worked on throughout the rest of the course. Combining the applied physics with design and engineering concepts in this class have made it a course that has really worked out for me at Urban and I am glad to have had a chance to take Inventions.
