Local/Regional News Item Monday, March 22, 2004 BY DURELL HALL JR., THE COURIER-JOURNAL Amber Wickliffe, 8, worked on her group's machine last week during the first "Rube Goldberg Day" at Walden School. The devices perform simple functions in absurdly roundabout manners. Nearly all of the school's 225 students created innovative machines for the day. About Top Jobs All Baxter McClave had to do was turn on a light. Goldberg, a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist who died in 1970, drew and designed such machines himself. Since then, his name has become synonymous with anything thought of as accomplishing a relatively simple task in an overly roundabout, convoluted way. Students clustered around Baxter's machine in the auditorium last week as he sent a ball through a funnel and down a spiraling tube taped to a stool. It pushed a matchbox car carrying a sharp pin through a racetrack loop to pop a balloon, which shifted weights and flipped a small light switch.

Frequently Asked Questions we are not asking enough from the adults that love them, teach them, and A ~ Schoolstaff will be working to determine if rube goldberg projects, and other http://www.monroe.wednet.edu/CHALLENGE/core/faq.html
Extractions: A ~ There are two primary reasons the Monroe Public Schools must complete this work this year. The first is that graduation requirements for ninth grade students, the graduating class of 2008, must be finalized and approved before this year's current 8th grade students move up to the 9th grade in September of 2004. Updated graduation requirements must meet the requirements of Washington's House Bill 1209, passed in 1993, that require new and more challenging graduation requirements for our public school students. The second reason is that research in teaching and learning suggests that we think differently about the "how" and the "why" of the educational process. In Monroe, we will be working toward higher standards, and providing more time and focus on the Essential Components of Teaching and Learning , in our classrooms. Q ~ Do students know what goals they are working toward?

They are written goals that help us know what to teach and when to teach it. When we are aware of these goals, it will be easier for us to achieve them. As a teacher I have learned my most valuable lessons, gained some of my most valuable life experience from students. Students will understand the structure of matter and the changes it can undergo. Matter is made of atoms, each with characteristic properties, which can combine to form all substances in the universe. The state and properties of matter may differ when it experiences chemical, physical, and nuclear changes.
