Extractions: 2003 August 7 (5763) The ninth of the Hebrew month of Av is a major fast day in the Jewish calendar, when the people lament the date of the destruction of both the First and Second Temples, with the subsequent loss of national sovereignty and exile from the Holy Land. The Ninth of Av is the date on which the Betar stronghold fell, the date of the Jewish expulsion from Spain in 1492, the beginning of Nazi deportations of Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto... The day is marked publicly in the State of Israel by the closure of restaurants, places of entertainment etc. from the previous evening, with food shops opening only for morning hours. The day is interpreted through its religious significance and/or its importance in connection with nationhood and national sovereignty - whether or not individuals choose to fast. Traditional observance includes the reading of the Book of Lamentations, the Kinot, a 25 hour fast, deprivation of comfort and physical contact. In Jerusalem, thousands of people stream towards the Kotel, the Western and only remaining Wall of the Second Temple to commemorate the destruction and pray for redemption.

Contact us The Call of the Shofar In this edition of Messianic Foundations, we're going to take a look at the ram's horn trumpet called the shofar in Hebrew. It has played an important role throughout Scripture, and will play a crucial role in the days that lie ahead as we wait for the return of the Messiah. We are going to look at some of the different ways the shofar was used, what symbolic representations it took on as Jewish theology was molded, and how all of these things might apply to us today. We're going to cover: Over the last decade there has been a growing trend in churches to incorporate the shofar or ram's horn into praise and worship. This uniquely stylized trumpet has become one of the few symbols in traditional Judaism which the church has felt comfortable adopting, and rightfully so. It has a meaningful position in our biblical heritage dating all the way back to Abraham, and plays a crucial role in prophetic events as believers in Messiah listen for the "last trump."[1]

Today's Torah reading for this first day of Sukkot is from the Parasha, Emor in Vayikra. It relates all the holy days and festivals of the year as prescribed in the Torah. In fact, it is located almost in the very center of the Chumash, which is a metaphor for how very central the holidays are in our lives. Rabbi Irving Yitz Greenberg's book, The Jewish Way, is a wonderful look at this very portion and served as my major source for preparing this talk. According to Greenberg, "The Classic method of incorporating events and theirs lessons into Jewish life is through the holidays." However, what is also very central in our lives today on this first day of Sukkot is what has been going on in the Middle East over this week. I know that it is difficult for many of you to be sitting here in shul today thinking about the Torah portions or anything else when your children and grandchildren are in Eretz Yisrael. In fact all our thoughts are on the people of Israel for your sons are our sons and your daughters are our daughters as all of the people of Israel are our family. Our prayers and thoughts are for a solid and enduring peace. In reference to the Torah portion I want you to respond with the first word that comes to mind as I name each of the holidays as they are mentioned in this parasha. First

Extractions: Free Translation Search this book: Night Following Vov Tishrei, 5750 The sixth of Tishrei is distinguished by two significant factors: It marks the passage of the majority of the Ten Days of Repentance. In Torah law, we find that, in certain dimensions, the majority of a quantity is considered as the totality of the quantity. Similarly, in the laws of prayer, though ten people are required for a minyan, all the prayers requiring a minyan can be recited when only six of the ten are actually praying. It is associated with the six days of creation and thus, is related to Rosh HaShanah which commemorates the creation of the world. These two factors are interrelated for Rosh HaShanah also shares a connection with the Ten Days of Teshuvah as obvious from our Sages' statement, "These are the Ten Days between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur." This implies that, in addition to the essential qualities which they possess in their own right, Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur also share in the general service of the Ten Days of Teshuvah.

(A rabbi-friend of mine jokes that this is his reward for making it through the exhausting month of Tishri which features Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, Hoshanah Rabbah, and Simchat Torah.) In the absence of holidays to muse on, I'll talk about synagogue some more. Ever wondered why we repeat the kaddish half a dozen times during the average synagogue service? If your answer is "no," don't feel sheepish; that was my answer for a long time, too. I was twenty-seven before I learned that the repetitions of the kaddish serve a purpose. We say kaddish every time we reach the end of one section of the liturgy and prepare to enter another. It's a marker, a pause, a time to catch our breath and reflect on where we are. Now that I know that, I enjoy the repetitions...but until I heard that teaching, the repetitions held no special meaning for me. They just felt...well, repetitious, and a little dull. (On a related note, I haven't heard anything that sufficiently explains the repetitions of the Amidah. Anyone out there have a good, or at least historical, reason for repeating the Amidah?)

Extractions: The High Holy Days and Christian Faith by Dr. John D. Garr T he system of praise, worship, and service which God, himself, gave to the Jewish people, known by the time of Christ as Judaism, included daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal, and generational reminders that summoned the Jewish people to celebrate the magnificent works of God in their behalf. These remembrances constituted a major part of the worship which Yahweh prescribed for his people. They included three hours of prayer daily, the weekly Shabbat, monthly new moon celebrations, and the festivals of Passover, Unleavened Bread, Firstfruits, Pentecost, Trumpets, Atonement, and Tabernacles. God knew full well that the all-too-human beings he had created were inclined to forget their connection with the Divine. For that reason, he instituted a system of remembrance, using the calendar that he had designed in the beginning when he flung the stars, sun, moon, and planets into space and ordained them to be for "signs, seasons, days, and years" (Genesis 1:14). One seventh of Gods creation was the institution of a day of rest which God never personally needed! Enervation? The Omnipotent never experienced it! God instituted Shabbat as a weekly marker in time to remind man that the universe had been "created" by God and that man, himself, did not evolve from some primordial ooze. Only one of the Ten Words that were thundered at Sinai by the Word of Gods shofar concerned remembrance: "

Extractions: Rabbi Melanie Aron Yom Kippur 5761 - Monday, October 9, 2000 There was no one as happy this summer about the nomination of Senator Joseph Liebermann to the vice presidency of the Unites States, as the rabbis of America. The bubbe's were happy- many hadn't believed they would live to see the day. The kids I talked to were happy, it was a kind of Jackie Robinson moment for Jews. But the rabbis were the happiest of all. First of all, they had one sermon all tied up for the high holidays, and it was only August 7th. How could one not make mention of this very significant moment in American Jewish history. Here was a candidate for one of the most visible positions in American politics, not as a third party fringe candidate, but on a major party ticket. Here was a candidate chosen without any concern by the non-Jewish world that his Jewishness would be an obstacle to his election. How ironic that two days after the nomination, a major survey of American Jewry revealed its findings, that 45% of American Jews did not believe that "Virtually all positions of influence are open to Jews in this country." With or without reservations, American Jewry has entered a new phase in our participation in American civic life. Unlike many previous Jewish candidates for public office, Joe Lieberman doesn't just have a Jewish name, isn't just of Jewish ancestry, or ethnically Jewish, but identifies clearly and directly with Judaism. Senator Joseph Lieberman was chosen as a synagogue attending, Sabbath observant, children in day school, core of the Jewish community, Jew.
