Extractions: LinkExchange Member Unknown Romance Novelists This is part of the A Celebration of Women Writers , but I have few clues about these women. They are the authors of novels I have from 1850s-1940s, or were taken from lists in old novels or catalogs. The Romance and Mystery writers of today are their literary grand-daughters. One of them is the great-grandmother of a friend - after her husband died, his family refused to help her, so she supported and educated her six children by writing. If you have any information about authors, please let me know : titles, birth or death dates, biographical information. If you have books by authors I haven't listed, I would welcome that too. Eventually the novels will be analysed for what they reflect about the women who wrote and read them, but for now I'm just collecting them. Also see:

I had been writing steadily for six years, but I could not seem to break into publishing. After 99 rejections and more than ten novels under my belt, I was ready to give up. As fate would have it, I was in attendance at NJRW's (New Jersey Romance Writer's) January meeting last year. Author Amanda Harte announced to the group that one of her publishers, Avalon Books, was about to start accepting manuscripts for their new historical line. While I was excited about the prospect, I had reservations. All three of my historicals were 100,000 words, and Avalon's word count could not excede 60,000. I was not used to writing within stringent guidelines, and Avalon has a specific audience (the library market across the United States), and guidelines. But I was determined to give it one last shot. I have always loved watching Westerns John Wayne and Gary Cooper are favorites of mine but I had never written one before. For some reason, I could just imagine a feisty Irish immigrant Margaret Mary Flaherty traveling cross country by herself, in a bid to help her brother save his ranch, and getting into more trouble than she bargained for. When I'd finished the first three chapters and the synopsis, I said a quick prayer and sent it off to Avalon. I received the partial back, with a letter advising that if I was willing to cut down on the number of religious references, that they would be willing to look at the partial again. I really didn't think I could, after all Margaret Mary Flaherty was an Irish Catholic immigrant! She was religious. During a lunch date with two writer friends, Terri Brisbin and Terri Castoro, I told them my news. They immediately asked when I planned on doing the revisions. I told them I didn't. They were incensed on my behalf, and by the time lunch was over, I was convinced that I could do it.
Authors On The Web - Romance Author Roundtable author listservs make it really easy to pick the brains Skye Currently, I m no longer writing historical romances. able to look up a king s biography on the http://www.authorsontheweb.com/features/0302-romance/romance-q4.asp
Extractions: 4. AOTW: If you write historical romances, how do you do your research? Julia Quinn: After eleven books, I have a good grounding in the basics of the time period in which I write: titles, forms of address, etiquette, etc. Other than that, I look things up as I need them or pose the question to other authors. Author listservs make it really easy to pick the brains of your colleagues! I write in three periods - Medieval around 1100, Georgian in the 1760s, and Regency, and have been doing so for over ten years now. This means that I have a solid knowledge base on these periods, but also that I can continually be adding to it. I'll do spot research for particular plot points (at the moment it's the history of the Stuart line of kings) but my ongoing research is always into social history; into how people lived. This can be the most elusive, but it's why I love primary sources. A diary or collection of letters may only have a few pieces of new information, but those are like gold. It is irritating, however, how people in the past neglected to detail their mundane lives! For example, for all the novels, diaries, and letters from the Regency period, we still don't have a clear picture of how social dancing was organized.
Authors On The Web - Romance Author Roundtable and I enjoy literary fiction, nonfiction, biography, and dramatic nor particularly care what other authors have done handsome hero as so many romances have had http://www.authorsontheweb.com/features/0302-romance/romance-q1.asp
Extractions: 1. AOTW: Romance authors are prolific writers. Knowing that there are so many romance books published each year, how do you keep your ideas fresh and avoid traveling over well-worn territory? Carly Phillips: It takes work! Especially when you've also written category books and have done as many as four or five a year. But it's the challenge of starting a new book that keeps me coming back for more. The adrenaline of getting to know new characters and people all over again. What I like to do is start with a scene or a set up and build character around that particular notion. I don't always work myself. I always bounce ideas off my critique partner, author Janelle Denison, and recently I've become part of a fantastic plotting group of authors, Janelle, Leslie Kelly and Julie Elizabeth Leto. All three authors have different strengths and I find if I bring my idea to the table, they can offer fresh takes on it that I haven't thought of! But the initial concept and execution is mine alone and so it's my challenge to give readers a hot, sexy, Carly Phillips book without duplicating myself or others. Hence, the panty thief plot in The Bachelor , the heroine being marriage-shy in The Playboy and the shocker of who the heroine's real father is in the upcoming The Heartbreaker . But it isn't easy! I strive to always give my readers a unique twist on the happy ending.
