L.C. is the author of " Caught in the Rain ", a romantic suspense set along the rugged coastal area of Southern California that was published in 2002. L.C. has a second romantic suspense novel coming out this fall entitled, " Destiny ". She's a member of EPIC, and the Co-founder of a Southern Connecticut Writer's Group. "Writing can be quite lonely at times," she says, "but through my group, I've been able to connect with people dealing with the same concerns. Our critique workshop has definitely improved my writing skills." L.C. spends her free time reading, exercising, and visiting friends. She loves to travel and finds inspiration in almost every place she's been. Her most recent trip was to the sparkling beaches of Hawaii, where she spent most of the time relaxing, sight seeing, and working on the island of Oahu, known for its famous landmark Diamond Head. Sharon Robinson: I write contemporary romance but even that requires research.  I chose locations that I know well but need to revisit.  I spend time in restaurants, on buses, walking streets - listening to conversations.  I conduct interviews, consult professionals from the same field and research events through the Internet. Amanda Scott: I have a Master's Degree in history, and my focus was British history with an emphasis on England and Scotland and a secondary interest in Wales that has grown stronger over the years as I investigate family history. I do massive amounts of research for each book, although my son frequently says that I know more about 16th century Scotland and early 19th century England than I know about 20th or 21st century America. I'm sure he's right about that, but there is always more to learn, and since much of my story material comes from the research, and it's nearly always fascinating; it's the easiest part of writing for me. Brenda Joyce: Extensively. I hate libraries, so I tend to buy books online-nowadays you can get even the hardest to find material online-but it's pricey. I also, from time to time, con a friend into working as my assistant and she'll go to the library. For the Deadly series, I use lots of newspaper articles.

Knowing that there are so many romance books published each year, how do you keep your ideas fresh and avoid traveling over well-worn territory? Nora Roberts: For me, character is key. Whatever book I'm working on, I've never written this book about these people in this situation before.  If I want the characters to be real to the reader, important and distinct to the reader, they have to be real, important and distinct to me first. If I do my job there, the story is going to be distinct, too. Susan Wiggs: In all genres - including mainstream and literary - the territory is limited if you look at it from the perspective of topic, issue or subject matter. In romance, the "well-worn territory" probably refers to fairytale situations like Cinderella or Beauty and the Beast, or traditional "hooks" such as "his secret baby" or "friends-to-lovers." But as far as I'm concerned, there are no limits. I tend not to think about the "idea" or "situation" so much as unique character's choices and responses. Nobody can own a setup or situation-each author puts her own unique spin on the familiar. For example, my recent "secret baby" book ( The You I Never Knew , Warner, 2000) avoided being a cliche because the "baby" was a sixteen-year-old juvenile delinquent.
