Extractions: FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER Maybe you've never seen an inline speed skating event. But you can picture it. Imagine a typical roller rink with small orange cones set in an oval around the middle to create a track along the outer ridge. Now imagine those speed ice skaters you watched in the Olympics, complete with full-body spandex, plastic helmets and swanky skates but with wheels, not blades. The skaters are bent at the waist, sailing along with that side-to-side leg sweep and arm swing. That's inline speed skating. And at Great Skate Roller Rink in Roseville, some of the best inline speed skaters meet twice a week to circle the rink in a blur. Kids as young as 5 and men and women as old as 60, all wearing spandex, skate together in one line, a train of skaters speeding along under the flickering red and blue disco lights. These are the Great Skate Wolverines, one of the most decorated inline teams in the country.

Ever wonder where you can find the world's largest collection of world skates? At the National Museum of Roller Skating in Lincoln, Nebraska, where roller skating's history in sport, recreation, entertainment, and business is contained. The first documented roller skate was invented in London in 1710. These early skates were little more than boards with wheels. The world of roller skating changed forever in 1863 when James L. Plimpton patented his "rocking skate" in the United States. This revolutionary motion enabled skaters to steer by leaning to the left or right, the same technique that is used with the high-tech marvels used to roller skate today. bodyOffer(32028) The popularity of roller skating zoomed. Plimpton opened a public rink and leased his new skates to the public. The first skating organization, the New York Roller Skating Association, formed in 1863. Speed and distance races became common in cities across America. In the 1930s modern show skating began which led to "Skating Vanities" a performance troupe similar to today's Ice Capades in 1942. The first United States Artistic Roller Skating Championships were held in 1939. Today roller skaters compete in American Dance and World Class Dance. Roller hockey organized in the early part of the century, played with a ball rather than a puck. This no-contact sport enters the Olympics as an exhibition sport in 1992.

Extractions: Volunteers are the backbone of Special Olympics Pennsylvania. We could not exist without the dedication of thousands of Pennsylvania citizens. The time, energy and enthusiasm of volunteers, fuel our movement and make our athletes dreams, a reality. There is a place for everyone in our organization. The sports-minded can find a place as a dedicated coach. The business person can lend their talent as an event organizer. The retiree can offer support as a coordinator and the student may want to invest their enthusiasm into a competition event. On the local level, a company owner can provide needed funding, and a community leader can assist with public relations opportunities. In the end, all of our volunteers have one thing in common a sense of personal pride knowing they're changing lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities! Special Olympics Pennsylvania is managed through local programs, most of which are county or city-based. All of our programs need a full complement of talents and skills. We currently need Managers, Coaches and Assistant Coaches, Public Relations and Fundraising Coordinators, Training and Competition Coordinators, Outreach and Medical Coordinators, Special Events and Family Coordinators, just to name a few.

Training schools throughout West Virginia are held to teach coaches and officials the most effective techniques in working with Special Olympics Athletes. Athletes are grouped by age, sex, and ability level so that every athlete can benefit from fair competition with an equal chance of success. Athletes are also encouraged to participate in schools and community programs, where they can train and compete in mainstream activities.

Extractions: A lot of people want to go to the Olympics, and only so many tickets are available. So to keep everybody happy, you sometimes have to stretch the definition of sport. This, no doubt, is how the Greeks came up with the pole vault. And this year offers a bounty of stupid sports to mollify the masses. Not only did I score you gymnastics tickets, you valuable client you, but they're for this year's newest Olympic sport, trampolining! And trampolining, if you think about it, isn't even so ridiculous a sport. At least it fulfills the basic requirement of promising very serious injury. Teenage girls jump 20 ft. in the air, do tricks called the double back tuck and the full-in-full-out, and then, if the long history of backyard trampolines is any indication, fall on their faces and cry. Jennifer Parilla, the 19-year-old who will represent all of America's hopes in Sydney, however, disappoints by saying her sport isn't really dangerous. "I've never had a backyard trampoline. They're so unsafe," she protests. Parilla insists her sport is totally legitimate. "We go over to anywhere in Europe, and our competitions are televised," she says. She obviously is not familiar with the quality of European programming.
