The Federation Internationale de Roller Skating (FIRS), the world governing body for roller skating competitions (hockey, speed and artistic, both on in-line skates and traditional four wheelers) has appointed Stephen Press, DC, of Englewood, New Jersey to head its commission. Dr. Press' background in rolling skating includes winning regional roller dance skating competitions with his partner in the 1960s, and coaching and judging competitions. This is the first time a chiropractor has held such a high position in the FIRS, an organization recognized by the International Olympic Committee and the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), of which the Federation Internationale de Chiropratique Sportive (FICS) is a member. Dr. Press, a 1978 graduate of Palmer College who has been in private practice in New Jersey for more than two decades, has served on the board of the ACA Sports Council, and is particularly known for his work in international sports chiropractic. He was the founding president of the Federation Internationale de Chiropratique Sportive, and was the chief physician for the Soviet Olympic team at the XVIth Winter Olympic Games at Albertville, France in 1992.

Boxing fans wept to some of Barry McGuigan's finest moments in the ring. But this was different. Roller skating might not have the adrenaline rush of a 100 metres sprint or the romance of a marathon, but for all that there was still passion a-plenty. Yesterday saw the "divisioning", or heats section, of the roller skating speed and artistic-dance competitions. The cavernous interior was converted into a sports arena for nearly 100 competitors, although none was from Ireland or Britain. They were supported by some 220 turquoise-shirted volunteers - in fact some volunteers were there to support other volunteers - and comprised a mix of translators, media officials and other staff.

These were the words of the President of the International Olympic Committee Juan Antonio Samaranch, who visited Slovenia in 1993, describing the extremely rapid development of sport and Olympic ideas in the country. Petitbled in Paris patented the first roller skate, again possessing three wheels in a row. During the next forty years, all skates had an in-line set of wheels, varying in number (some had as many as six or as few as two) and in their design. These skates, however, lacked the ability to turn easily. In 1863, James Plimpton revolutionized the roller skate by inventing a skate with four wheels, two pairs set side by side, also known as a quad skate. Because this skate allowed for greater control and ease of skating, the four-wheeled skate quickly came to dominate the industry. Though largely renounced in favor of the more popular quad skate, several companies designed skates using an in-line set of wheels. The in-line skate Scott Olson saw which influenced his idea for Rollerblade skates, however, was a 1966 Chicago Roller Skate Company skate. Possessing four wheels in a row, with the front and back wheel extending beyond the boot, the skate resembled the blade of an ice skate. The Olson brothers adopted and adapted this design, and with it caused a popular reaction to roller skating nearly unparalleled in the sport's history.
