Extractions: Copper World Mine Rock hounding, prospecting and exploring the geology of our environment are a natural extension of the study of mining and their artifacts. Books and relics need to be put in perspective, and the only way to do that is to understand their history and the geology . This can only be done seeing, touching and experiencing it in person. The purpose of this site is to share a collection of rock hounding adventures into the south western deserts and mountains. Many of the sites I have visited are listed in the Gem Trails books available at your local bookstores. What I have found to be lacking, is current information, detailed collection status, site pictures and GPS coordinates. It seems that most of the collection sites in these books are too hard to find and when you finally do get there the materials are of poor quality, It would be useful to at least have a fair expectation of what will be at a given location. I hope to post as many sites as I can document and hopefully some that my fellow rock hounders wish to share. This will be a work in progress. Please share any and all worthy sites with me at this information portal. I will be looking for site descriptions, directions, GPS co-ordinates and collection descriptions with lots of pictures. If you have an interesting site to share please forward your information to mserino@mindspring.com

Cathedral Valley Mt Bike Ride technically difficult ride. The scenery is remarkable, particularly if you are into rock hounding or geology. You cross formations http://utahoutdoors.com/pages/cathedralvlly.htm
Extractions: Cathedral Valley Mt Bike Ride The scenic loop through Cathedral Valley, in the northern part of Capitol Reef National Park, is "the finest multi-day mountain bike outing in the Milky Way galaxy, if not the entire universe," according to Michael McCoy, author of Mountain Biking Adventures In The Four Corners Region. With praises like that, we decided it was time to get down there ourselves and see if it deserves that kind of hype. Michael's book is great - we recommend it. But, in this case we have to disagree with his conclusion. The ride is fun, and long (65 miles), and cuts through an amazing variety of scenic geological formations. It's up there near the top on our list, but there are several other rides in Utah which are just as good, perhaps better. The loop follows a graded road which can easily be traveled in a high clearance vehicle (four-wheel drive is not usually needed, but comes in handy in spots). The road crosses steep hill after steep hill, so it is a physically demanding ride. The road is sandy in many areas, and rocky in others, but this is not a technically difficult ride. The scenery is remarkable, particularly if you are into rock hounding or geology. You cross formations like the Bentonite Rainbow Hills, enchanted playgrounds which are almost impossible to pass without stopping to explore. You go by lookout points which offer breathtaking views of the Park's South Desert, the Waterpocket Fold, the Henry Mountains to the southeast, and Thousand Lake Mountain to the west. Cathedral Valley itself is spectacular, but it is almost upstaged by these supporting cast members.

Extractions: Good evening! 30 November, 2000 really mean to do that?' So - being suitably chastened by my computer, I return to things I really do enjoy. Writing Mike's Notes and engaging in one of my many 'favorite' hobbies: amateur geology. There's just something about rock formations, old quarries, caves, hills, cliffs, volcanoes,...etc. that fascinates me. Every now and then I'll stop by the side of the road; take out my old rock hammer and magnifier and add a new specimen to my growing collection of interesting rocks. Of course, it's important to note that I always go to sites where rock collecting is allowed. More often as not, though, I'll simply grab my ever-present camera and snap a picture that I can enjoy on those proverbial rainy days. Half the fun in 'rock hounding' as it's known, is knowing where to look. For that, I rely on a series of books published by a small company nestled in the heart of the mountains, appropriately named Mountain Press. They produce a fantastic series of books called 'Roadside Geology Of ...' written by geological experts from many areas of the country. These books are written to serve as a geological tour guide with typical entries such as this one from the Roadside Geology of Arizona: " At mile 21 the lava-filled and later eroded conduit of a volcano, a volcanic neck, rises quite close to the highway, an interesting little peak with several radiating dikes

Extractions: Member Login About Us Advertise Ministry Partners ... AACC Rocks can be fascinating to young and old. A simple collecting trip requires little more than the desire to get outdoors and to notice the geological wonders of the earth. Collecting rocks, or just looking at interesting ones, can be a fun family activity. Materials Needed: Activity: Prepare for your rock hounding trip by first choosing an area that has interesting rocks. You may need to check with local experts at a rock shop, university, or gem club for advice on where to collect. The best areas are where rock is exposed - a quarry, mine dump, excavation gravel pit, stream, beach, road cut, dry wash, or plowed field. The best time for finding good material is often in the spring or after a storm, when fresh rock is exposed. Be careful to obey the laws of your country. In the United States, rock hounding is usually legal on public lands, but not in national parks, national monuments, and other restricted areas. It is also against the federal law to collect vertebrate fossils and Indian artifacts in the United States. Collecting on private lands requires the permission of the owner. Obeying the laws of your country, using courtesy, and taking good safety precautions can help to make your trip more enjoyable.
