Advancing technology and changing requirements continue to pose new problems for multiprocessor systems, particularly concerning reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS). I like to work at boundaries between computing systems and their implementation technologies, drawing on my background in physics, electronics and optics. In the past, this included projects ranging from high speed interconnect links (optical and electronic), over computer chess machines (Deep Thought) to chasing RF interference problems in avionics packages for computer controlled, small scale airplanes. Currently, I'm focussed on developing a special purpose microscope to trace the neuronal structures of small biological specimens. The long term goal of this research is to "reverse engineer" these biological computing structures. I believe that research in computer architecture is best driven by concrete, real applications. In this context, the microscope mentioned above poses a tough challenge in the areas of image processing and scientific signal processing. To be able to scan an object as large as a laboratory mouse, nearly 20 Peta-Byte of raw data must be processed in real time. This is a very interdisciplinary research projects that includes VLSI circuit design, fiber optics, sensor development, holography, lasers, RF electronics, micro-robotics, and applied computer science. The beauty (to me) of this project is that number of very different technologies have to come together to sole one concrete, easy to fathom purpose.

Extractions: Human Activity Detection and Recognition The General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception (GRASP) Lab, is a multi-disciplinary research laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Founded in 1979 by Professor Ruzena Bajcsy, the lab has grown today to be one of the premier research labs focusing on fundamental research in robotics, vision, perception, control and automation. The GRASP laboratory is housed in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania with faculty, students and staff in Computer and Information Science Electrical and Systems Engineering and Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics . The lab also maintains close ties within the School of Engineering and Applied Science to the machine learning group , the Center for Human Modeling and Simulation , and the hybrid systems group , and outside the school to the Institute for Strategic Threat Analysis and Response and research groups in the School of Medicine , and the School of Arts and Science . In addition, we have active collaborations with industrial partners, government laboratories, and other academic institutions.

Extractions: From the moment I became involved in the creation of new technologies, their ethical dimensions have concerned me, but it was only in the autumn of 1998 that I became anxiously aware of how great are the dangers facing us in the 21st century. I can date the onset of my unease to the day I met Ray Kurzweil, the deservedly famous inventor of the first reading machine for the blind and many other amazing things. Ray and I were both speakers at George Gilder's Telecosm conference, and I encountered him by chance in the bar of the hotel after both our sessions were over. I was sitting with John Searle, a Berkeley philosopher who studies consciousness. While we were talking, Ray approached and a conversation began, the subject of which haunts me to this day. I had missed Ray's talk and the subsequent panel that Ray and John had been on, and they now picked right up where they'd left off, with Ray saying that the rate of improvement of technology was going to accelerate and that we were going to become robots or fuse with robots or something like that, and John countering that this couldn't happen, because the robots couldn't be conscious.

Extractions: Ph.D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professor Matsuoka's research is directed toward constructing assistive, haptic and other robotic devices to understand, assist, and enhance the human motor control and learning systems. There are three multidisciplinary approaches taken in this research. The first approach is to investigate the sensori-motor control mechanisms in the central nervous system by performing psychophysical experiments on human subjects. Explorations of learning limits and/or the difference between normal and neurologically-impaired subjects can shed light on techniques to provide the stimuli required for learning enhancement. The second approach is to investigate the interface between the neural systems and external devices. Recent findings suggest that animals are capable of performing tasks that are normally impossible when they are provided with artificial neural feedback. Professor Matsuoka is interested in extracting neuromuscular parameters of human subjects during training, manipulating the parameters externally, and applying artificial force or electrical feedback. Experiments can then be performed to determine the effect of artificial feedback on human motor control and learning. The third approach is the development of human interactive/interface robots (i.e. wearable, haptic, and humanoid robots). There is growing acceptance of robots as safe devices for surgery and rehabilitation. However, the relationship between the design of the robot and the effect on the interacting person is not well understood. Professor Matsuoka intends to optimize robot design, actuators and sensors for safety, comfort and human motor performance enhancement.
