Beginning around 1000 AD, Swahili-Arab slave-traders gradually penetrated the region from their city-states on the eastern coast of Africa. Between the 14th and 16th centuries a Bantu-speaking group known as the Maravi migrated from present-day Congo (Za¯re) and established kingdoms in eastern and southeastern Zambia. In the 18th century, Portuguese explorers following the routes of Swahili-Arab slavers from the coast into the interior became the first known European visitors. After the Zulu nation to the south began scattering its neighbors, victims of the Difaqane (forced migration) began arriving in Zambia in the early 19th century. Squeezed out of Zimbabwe, the Makalolo people moved into southern Zambia, pushing the Tonga out of the way and grabbing Lozi territory on the upper Zambezi River. The celebrated British explorer David Livingstone travelled up the Zambezi in the 1850s, searching for a route into the interior of Southern Africa, hoping to introduce Christianity and European civilisation to combat the horrors of the slave trade. Livingstone's efforts attracted missionaries, who in turn brought hunters and prospectors in their wake. In the 1890s much of Zambia came under the control of the British South Africa Company (BSAC), which sought to prevent further Portuguese expansion in the area.

The first upright-walking 'hominids' established themselves in the savannas of southern and eastern Africa nearly 4 million years ago. These human-like creatures slowly developed into persons-as-we-know-'em as more sophisticated tools were produced and climatic conditions became more favourable. By the middle Stone Age, which lasted until 20,000 years ago, organised hunting and gathering societies had been established, and by 8000BC, late Stone Age people occupied rock shelters and caves all over southern Africa. The first inhabitants of Zimbabwe were probably nomadic, adaptable San groups, gradually absorbed by Khoi-Khoi grazier tribes, and slowly transmuting into a culture known as Khoisan. Bantu-speaking farmers, either Khoisan settlers or Iron Age migrants from the north, were the first occupants of the Great Zimbabwe site in the south of the country. Between 500 and 1000AD, the Gokomere (a Bantu group into gold-mining and cattle ranching) enslaved and absorbed San groups in the area. As early as the 11th century, some foundations and stonework were in place at Great Zimbabwe and the settlement, generally regarded as the nascent Shona society, became the trading capital of the wealthiest and most powerful society in south-eastern Africa. The hilltop acropolis at Great Zimbabwe came to serve not only as a fortress but as a shrine for the worship of Mwari, the pre-eminent Shona deity. By the 15th century, Great Zimbabwe's influence had begun to decline, due to a heady cocktail of overpopulation, overgrazing, popular uprisings and political fragmentation.

In 1970 Rhodesia became a republic, with complete separation of the franchise along racial lines. UN economic sanctions were applied against the Smith regime, and two African nationalist groups, led by Joshua Nkomo and Robert Mugabe, launched guerrilla attacks against the government.

Approximately 2,000 years ago the Hottentots followed the Bush people who were then followed by Bantu speakers. The three groups coexisted happily and there was a flourishing trade between them. Shona speakers settled in the north east of Botswana in around the 10th century AD. The first Tswana settled in the south east of Botswana in approximately the 15th century possibly having migrated from the south. By the 18th century the Tswana were very well established in the area. In 1820 various clans began to form into a string of nations along what is now the border between Botswana and South Africa this was prompted because the clans felt the need to defend themselves against the tide of humanity fleeing from the Transvaal and Natal between 1820 and 1840 as a result of Zulu militancy and Boer expansionism. The borders were secured in 1885 with the declaration of a British protectorate known as Bechuanaland, the reason behind the declaration was the rivalry between the British and the Boers. The capital of the Bangwato clan at Shoshong had a population of about 30,000 by 1960.

By August 1938 the strength of the Regiment stood at 20 Europeans (of whom the officers were mostly seconded from the British Army) and 401 African troops. That same year the first European Reserve was formed to begin military training for white settlers, and in August of the following year the new African Reserve began accepting volunteers. It was also in August 1939 that European reservists were mobilized and the existing strength of the Regiment became officially "1st Battalion The Northern Rhodesia Regiment". From such humble beginnings, and a total white population of less than 20,000, came the force that Northern Rhodesia considered "...one of the greatest efforts of any British Colony during the 1939-1945 campaign."

    Extractions: Rhodesians Worldwide Magazine has been able to, during the past few years, obtain many 16mm movie reels of material send to various organisations around the world by the Rhodesians Information Services (Ministry of Information). These reels have come from South Africa and New Zealand. Our main goal has been to preserve this part of Rhodesian history and in the process we have transferred this material to video tape. The film on the reels is deteriorating fast because of the chemicals originally used to process it. In consultation with an expert, who used to work with Steven Spielgberg's project to preserve the Hollywood movie reels which are in the same predicament, we had the film cleaned and are attempting to preserve it to the best of our ability. In the mean time we are making available to anyone interested copies of the material we transferred to video. We are willing to place any three titles from the table below on one VHS video for a cost of US$25 plus postage. British Settlement And Administration In 1888, Cecil Rhodes obtained a concession for mineral rights from local chiefs. Later that year, the area that became Southern and Northern Rhodesia was proclaimed a British sphere of influence. The British South Africa Company was chartered in 1889, and the settlement of Salisbury (now Harare, the capital) was established in 1890. In 1895, the territory was formally named Rhodesia after Cecil Rhodes under the British South Africa Company's administration.

Some 450 miles (725 km) long from north to south and 520 miles (835 km) wide, its area is 150 300 square miles (389 000 sq.km). It is roughly the size of the state of Montana. The climate comprises two seasons: hot wet summers (October through to March) and dry mild winters. In the high altitudes there are a number of frosty nights. The long annual drought means most rivers dry up and therefore are not used for communication. Boundaries: North: the frontier with Zambia is bounded by the great Zambezi River and Lake Kariba. Apart from two bridges, at Victoria Falls and Chirundu, and the dam wall at Kariba, crossing can only be effected by boat. East: the frontier with Mozambique was originally demarcated by a series of surveyors' pegs and a low wire fence. Much of this border would later be flanked by a fenced anti-personnel minefield.

The Central African Airways (CAA) Viscounts operated all Regional Services, while BOAC operated the International Service to London on behalf of CAA (known as the Zambesi Service). In 1965 Southern Rhodesia declared its Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) and in 1966 the UN applied mandatory sanctions aimed at causing the collapse of the 'illegal regime'. This prevented CAA taking delivery of the two BAC 1-11 series 207 aircraft which it had on order, and set the stage for Air Rhodesia to become a major Viscount operator over the next few years. Viscount 784D VP-YNA in 1960s livery In 1968 CAA was wound up as an operating airline and the fleet of 5 Viscounts were divided between Air Rhodesia (3 aircraft) and Air Malawi (2 aircraft). Three Viscounts proved insufficient, and two Viscount 782s were obtained from Iraqi Airlines followed by 2 Viscount 754s from Middle East Airlines.

Above this is a lion between two thistles taken from the arms of our Founder, Cecil John Rhodes, which reminds us of him and of the pioneers who opened up the country and brought to it the benefits of peace, commerce and civilisation. THE ZIMBABWE BIRD CREST Refers to the contribution of the African to the history and economy of the country. THE SUPPORTERS Two Sable Antelope, stand for our country's heritage of game and wild life. THE MOTTO Means "May she be worthy of her name", reminds us of the ideals of our founder: equal rights for all civilised men and freedom, justice and commerce. The motto on the flag is "Sit Nomine Digna", and was on the Rhodesian coat of arms adopted in 1924 (granted by Royal Warrant on 11 August of that year) and thus indirectly the "Flag motto". The translation is "May She be worthy of the Name".
