The authors of the plan say it represents a reasonable compromise between higher education, which originally wanted candidates to enroll in a master's program, and The Education Partnership, which felt that there were too many hurdles for non-traditional candidates to overcome. "Am I completely satisfied with it? No," said Larry Purtill, president of the National Education Association Rhode Island. "But it's something I can live with." Alternative certification isn't for everyone, however. It is open only to those who want to teach in subject areas in which there are shortages, such as math, science and special education.
