Six of these palatial estates are owned, maintained and operated by the Preservation Society of Newport County. Privately owned mansions include: The Astors' Beechwood, where costumed actors recreate the fabulous 1890's lifestyle; Rough Point, former home of tobacco heiress, Doris Duke; the American Illustration Museum, and Belcourt Castle, summer residence of Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont. SLATER MILL HISTORIC SITE: Old Slater Mill (1793), "Birthplace of the American Industry", was the first factory in America to successfully produce cotton yarn with water-powered machines. The mill now houses operating machinery used to illustrate the process of converting raw cotton to finished cloth. The historical treasure also includes the Sylvanus Brown House (1758) and the Wilkinson Mill (1810). A reconstructed 16,000 lb. water wheel is still in operation. INTERNATIONAL TENNIS HALL OF FAME: For tennis lovers, the oldest grass courts in America, and the only ones open for public play, can be found at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, located in the historic Newport Casino. Extractions: In the early 1990s, Providence, the capital city, began a metamorphosis that has been heralded as nothing less than a Renaissance by journalists and visitors from all over the world. Blessed with an abundance of vibrant neighborhoods and 17th and 18th century architecture, Providence has long been considered a "walking" city. This status has been greatly enhanced by the recent addition of attractions such as Waterplace Park & Riverwalk and its signature event, WaterFire, the Fleet Skating Center, and Providence Place, an upscale shopping and entertainment mall. Venetian-inspired footbridges span the canals, connecting the collegiate East Side to the heart of the city. In warm weather, a leisurely ride aboard an authentic Venetian gondola is a singularly romantic experience, unmatched in any other U.S. city. Thanks, in part, to the presence of the worlds largest culinary college at Johnson & Wales University, Providence is also a premier restaurant city, whose chefs rival those in Boston and New York City. The west ends Federal Hill neighborhood is infused with the finest Italian fare, while the East Side home of the Ivy League Brown University and renowned Rhode Island School of Design is a melting pot of Asian, European and Latin American flavors. And the "downcity" area where the financial district meets the arts & entertainment district is well seasoned with acclaimed restaurants featuring award-winning New American cuisine.

Administration : Campus Improvement Projects Rhode Island College continues its extensive renovation, refurbishment, and capital improvement program. These projects are financed from a variety of sources, including general obligation bond issues passed in 1998 and 2000, the Rhode Island Capital Improvement Program, revenue bonds, the Rhode Island College Foundation, the Rhode Island College Alumni Association, third-party grants, and unrestricted College funds. Please bear in mind that this update is a snapshot that is accurate only as of the most recent update of this page. Because of a variety of circumstances beyond the college's direct control, the status and details of each project are subject to change. Campus Master Plan A multi-year building improvement project is underway. During the summer of 2003 the focus is on completion of painting and varnishing and installation of new carpeting on the main floor (Level C), funded through the Asset Protection program. RGB is the architect for this phase of the improvement program. Also underway this summer is a separate project to renovate all restrooms throughout the building, funded through a $349,000 ADA supplemental grant. The design firm for the restroom renovations is Blount Bennett Architects. Alger Hall After considerable input from faculty, staff, and students, Kite Carbone Architects of Providence (formerly William Kite Architects) has completed schematic plans for the renovation of the 45-year old Alger Hall to serve as a signature home for the College's School of Management and Technology. A total of about $3.5 million is available for the project, including $3 million from the state's Rhode Island Capital Fund and the remainder from other sources, including Asset Protection. In addition to classrooms and faculty offices, plans include new study areas, a large, flexible conference space, and the reconfiguration of building entrances. Construction is expected to begin this fall. It is anticipated that construction could begin during the Fall 2003 semester. On June 2, 2003, Faculty and administrative offices began moving to temporary quarters in Building 2 on the East Campus.

Extractions: Hank Adams' work bridges the vast gap between tradition and innovation. His busts recall centuries-old traditions expressed in marble, bronze and wood. Rather than portraits of mythic gods, heroes, nobility or politicians, Adams models a more generic image, intended to serve as a generalized reference to mankind. His busts have a spiritual kinship to the French artist Jean Dubuffet, whose figures are raw, spontaneous and direct. Surprisingly, the often fragile nature of glass is transformed in his treatment to a material of great mass and durability like the busts of his historical predecessors. Whereas traditional materials tend to absorb light, Adams' sculpture captures light and enables it to act as an internal resonator, enlivening the surface from within. In addition to a heavily faceted and pitted surface, Adams energizes his forms with embedded debris. These veiled references to a modern industrial world charge the work with political and cultural overtones, endowing a certain dysfunction to his character.
