We can communicate internally from classroom to classroom, or from classroom or library to the world! We have five 6 computers in the Library Media Center, all of them networked for internet use. Classes use this "mini-lab" frequently for research and word processing, as well as other classroom enhancement activities. We use an on-line circulation and catalog system. The catalog can be accessed from any classroom or office.. These capabilities help the students and faculty of Hope Valley School become a community of life-long learners. We emphasize the development of information literacy skills in our students, and use the Big Six Information Skills Model when doing research. Certain behaviors that are often established during youth contribute markedly to todays major killers, such as heart disease, cancer, and injuries. These behaviors include tobacco use; unhealthy dietary habits; inadequate physical activity; alcohol and other drug use; sexual behaviors that can result in HIV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases, and unintended pregnancies; and behaviors that result in violence and unintentional injuries (e.g., driving while intoxicated). These behaviors place young people at increased risk for serious health problems, both now and in the future. During the past 20 years, decreases in physical activity coupled with unhealthy eating has resulted in a doubling of the percentage of children and adolescents who are overweight.

The Foundation lauded Patricia A. Nolan, MD, MPH, for her leadership in establishing school-based health centers in Rhode Island and in Colorado where she was previously Director of Health. The Foundation announced seven of the national awards; Dr. Nolan is the only state health director recognized. "This recognition honors the work of the whole Department of Health on this important issue. The Robert Woods Johnson Foundation Award four years ago gave us a wonderful opportunity to increase the number of our school-based health centers from three to seven. If I could wave a magic wand, I would start a planning process for a school-based health center in every high school, and require each community health center, organized ambulatory care facility and hospital to be a part of one or more planning groups," Dr. Nolan said.

It was relocated to a site at the edge of Wilcox Park on Grove Avenue in the early part of the last century. The present home of Westerly High School entered service on Ward Avenue in 1938. Westerly High School has always had its own library. Through most of the 1940's, 50's, and 60's it was located on the second floor in this small (1035 sq. ft.) room. The Library 1940 Included in a burst of construction, the library was moved to the first floor in 1967. It remained there until more building alterations in 1995 moved it back to the second floor over what had been a roof. The photo below shows a portion of the main (4675 sq. ft.) reading room.

Naughton, state representative from Warwick and chair of the Rhode Island Legislative Commission on Aquaculture, has devoted much of her legislative career to promoting aquaculture and related marine businesses as a viable force in Rhode Islands economy. She has also put money where her mouth is, directing funds to projects ranging from an educators network that brings practical aquaculture into classrooms to a million-dollar-plus university/industry/government partnership that nurtures the industry through technological support and applied-science grants. "This is about commerce and about improving our environment," Naughton says of aquaculture and the supporting businesses it generates. Pointing to Rhode Islands maritime heritage, its ready workforce, and the intellectual and scientific capacity of its universities, she contends that the state has the resources to be a major player in global aquaculture efforts.

The survey, conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research, found that residents of the Ocean State would be willing to give up potential large tax cuts if it meant that the needs of Rhode Island's most vulnerable children, youth, and families would be better served. The poll sampled voter attitudes toward funding levels for various children's services in the state, such as child protection, Head Start, and after school programs, in relation to proposed tax cuts now before Congress. Regardless of their age group or party affiliation, the state's voters favored investing in programs to help children and families. Three out of four voters (79%) said they would support a smaller tax cut if it meant more funding for after school, child care, and school readiness programs such as Head Start. In contrast, less than half (48.6%) would support a smaller tax cut in order to build new highways, and only about one-third (37.9%) would support a smaller tax cut if it meant more funds for advanced military weapons and the national missile defense shield. "This poll confirms our belief that most people would prefer helping distressed children and families to taking the largest tax cut possible. It's about investments in all of our futures. Once again, the public is way ahead of many politicians," commented CWLA Deputy Director Michael Petit. Seventy-seven percent of those responding believed that "government has a role in preventing and treating child abuse and neglect."
