Stitching is surely a learning process, and the hands that ply stitches have had the guidance of wiser teaching hands. This has repeated itself throughout history. From the 17th through the 19th Century, children from three to as old as ten were often sent to dame schools. These schools were usually conducted by widowed women of reduced means in their homes or rented buildings. The education though rudimentary, frequently, included needlework This was available only for the fortunate female, and for many it would be their single brush with formal education Plain sewing, knitting and marking samplers were usually taught. (It is interesting, to note that most extant male samplers appear to have been made in dame schools.) These marking samplers would prepare the students for the task of marking textiles so necessary for their laundering and rotation, and for ownership and legacy purposes.

Long before researchers began acknowledging that cultural definitions of intelligence are too limited, Greenwood School founders made the philosophical commitment to focus on abilities rather than disabilities. Thus the school has been able to form a variety of bridges between gifted, special and regular educational programs. By emphasizing the intellectual and emotional/creative strengths of its students, and by incorporating remedial language therapy into every facet of the school day, Greenwood School has set a new standard in remedial language education, earned an excellent reputation among its peers, and a loyal and grateful following among its parents and alumni. Greenwood Institute will be working closely with several major research centers, including those at Yale University, the University of Washington, Tufts University, and Wayne State University in Detroit, to evaluate its approaches to both student remediation and teacher education. Thomas Scheidler founded the Greenwood Institute in 1981, in order to share the knowledge and expertise of Greenwood School teachers through conferences, workshops, consulting services, and teacher training. Louisa Cook Moats, Ed.D., joined the Institute as director of clinical services and training in 1994.

Extractions: Along with several Westtown teachers and administrators, I recently had the opportunity to attend an inspirational workshop with a former colleague of mine from Moses Brown School in Rhode Island, Kevin Jennings. Kevin is now the executive director of GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network. As part of the workshop, we participated in a survey designed to see how accepting of diversity our schools are. Each of us from Westtown completed the survey individually, but our results were remarkably similar. What we discovered was that when it comes to programs and curricula, Westtown is much more inclusive with regard to diversity than it is in terms of formal procedures. In other words, our practices are out in front of our policies.

Extractions: Class action status is being sought in a $25 billion dollar lawsuit filed against the federal government and three Roman Catholic boarding schools. The schools named in the suit include St. Francis Mission school on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation, St. Paul's in Marty, the headquarters of the Yankton Sioux Tribe, and Holy Rosary on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, all of which educated Sioux children in South Dakota. The suits were filed by five Sioux who claim they were abused at the schools, and there may be thousands of other students who could join the suit. The plaintiffs allege various forms of abuse by the priests and nuns, including beatings and sexual abuse while attending the boarding schools as a federal program to induce Indians to assimilate into white society.
